1993 g20 with clueless girl owner

Hi! I'm the brand new owner for my lovely 1993 R-titled G20 here in Pittsburgh, PA. I'm entirely new to the whole clutch thing, but starting to get the hang of it... I have only stalled out 3 times so far!!! :hehehe: So if anyone cares to share any insight into my new car, please share!!!! I'd love to know more about my precious baby.

Hey where in pittsburgh are you from? I was born and raised in Indiana, PA, bout 1.5 hours northeast of the burgh.....

Indiana is a little ways from me. I"m actually 40 minutes due south of the Burgh... Any hints as to how to battle these hills with my newly learned clutching capabilities? My dad has me using the parking brake and then letting it go when 1st gear catches from the clutch. Any other ideas that are a bit easier to master?

The trick to learning to drive a manual gearbox car is to not be afraid to slip the clutch a little. It seems everyone is afraid to slip the clutch. That goes back 50 years or more when the friction material was more delicate. Don't sweat it. Sit in a parking lot and learn to keep the revs at 3k rpm. When you can keep them there, slowly step off the clutch. At 3k rpm the car won't stall and you'll be fine. As you get the hang of it, learn to slowly add throttle as the clutch catches and you'll catch on in a hurry.

Lugging the engine is far worse than slipping the clutch. When you lug the engine the crankshaft vibrates like crazy. So, don't lug the engine, slip the clutch.

On the hills, add 1-1.5k more rpm and learn to step off a little more quickly. Just don't side step it.

That used to drive me nuts when I was learning to drive a stick in my wife's (then g/f) '89 Pulsar. I would do that all the time when going from 1st to 2nd. Arrgh!

Wow! I can't believe all the replies! Thanx for all the suggestions on shifting... I'll be sure to flash some of your specs in pretending to know what I'm talking about. Unfortuneately, I don't really plan on "dressing" my car up. I'm all about the basics, like window tinting... BTW: does anyone know anything about PA state tinting regulations or where I can find out?
