MAF and Throttle Body change on LT-1/LS-1
I just bought a used '96 Firebird. I'm not sure if it's an LS-1 or LT-1, but it is the V8. I'd like to know if anyone has made these changes on their car, and what were their experiences:
Has anyone changed out the OEM MAF and throttle body for aftermarket oversized parts? Did you notice a significant increase for each swap? Was it worth it? Thank you. |

Your bird would be an LT1 motor if it's a V8. 1993-1997 V8's were all LT1's.
As for swapping out the MAF, I don't know how much of a gain you'll see. Most of the people that I know that have switched them out on LS1's have had problems with the computer throwing up warning lights because of it, or their car runs really lean. Most that get a MAFT with it though seem to not have problems because it's supposed to straighten out what the computer feels are problems. I haven't done it on my LS1, but your LT1 shouldn't be much different. I'm sure I didn't help, but there ya go.

The throttle body shouldn't throw a code, but if it does ATAP should be able to help you out fixing it. I'd guess the blade passed 90* which will set off a code.
The MAFT is used to tune the A/F some. It basically alters the numbers sent to the computer from the MAF sensor, so you can trick the computer to add more or less fuel. As for gains, not much if you are stock. If you have other intake mods to free up flow as well as exhaust then you may see a few horsepower, but i dunno how much exactly.

new Grannetalli motorsports MAF cost 300 bucks.
New Holley 52mm TB cost 300 bucks. Total cost 600 bucks. Total HP gain maybe 5-6 ![]() Take that 600 bucks and buy some Hooker Long Tubes Jet-Hot coated headers have them installed still have 100 bucks for gas and ass. Total cost 500-600 bucks. Total HP gain probably 20-25 real HP. Get them you'll love them dont waste money now on intake stuff except CAI you have to get the whole engione breathing better like the heads and headers before adding all the intake stuff or you'll overkill the intake and won't see much gain. Yeah after heads and headers and intake manifold them a new MAF and TB would make a difference.
