I bought a 95 Chevy Lumina about a year ago, and for the past three months I've had some issues. Everytime I get these things fixed, the same issues return. First, when I slow down, there's a noise that gradually grows louder with the slower I become. It's coming from the drivers side rear area, and I was thinking it was a strut, but I'm not sure. The noise sounds something along the lines of "Do, do, do, do, do." Then, I took my car to Midas to have the front end alligned and they told me I needed to have my tire rod end and ball joint on the drivers side fixed. They "fixed it" and it broke. I had it fixed again, and it broke again. This issue seems to eat my brakes, as I've had about three pairs put on the front end in the last three-four months. Finally, when I have the wheel to the right, a whistling noise comes from the front end. However, when I bring it back to the left, the noise becomes more quiet. If ANYONE has ANY idea on how I can try to get these issues resolved, please do leave some feedback!

Re: Issues with Lumina
My mom's car was making a thuming noise at slower speeds a while back. It turned out to be a tire that was off ballance. I doubt that's what's causing your brake problems though. She also had a bad wheel bearing. Have you had those looked at?
I'm not sure what could be causing the whistling noise. |

Re: Issues with Lumina
Hate to suggest it, but do a carfax report on it. Sounds like it got T-boned and poorly repaired. Have a friend follow you down the road and see if the car is "crabbing."
The tie rod breaking sounds like a terrible misalignment in the front suspension. The alignment shop may have not noticed it because they only set static alignment. If the mount points on the chassis have been altered they could still align it, but during suspension travel you may have excessive bump steer. Does the "do do do" noise only happen when braking or anytime you're slowing down? The turning whistle is probably power steering related. Its possible that the fluid is whistling through an orifice in the right-side of the actuator valve. Its also possible that its stressing the belt tensioner or idler pulley making it squeal... or the belt itself. My diesel does that. When the glow plugs cycle on and off it whistles. its the alternator belt squeaking from the alternator draw. Unless it changes, I'd ignore it. You could spend thousands chasing down parts and it might keep whistling.
