Has anyone tried Pine Sol to remove paint?
Has anyone tried Pine Sol to remove paint?
I am currently trying to strip the paint off a Kyosho Mini Z body. It is plastic like most model bodies. The paint has been giving me fits. I tried the Castrol Super Clean and Brake fluid. No luck. The Super Clean did not even put a dent in the paint. The brake fluid turned the paint/body into a white gooey mess. I had the body sitting in the brake fluid overnight. It was in a Plastic Super Big Gulp cup so only the back half of the body was sittling in the fluid. I'm not sure if the plastic was melted or the paint turned soft. The only way to describe it is scraping stuck gum off your shoe. Some of it comes off but the rest just smears around. Does anyone know if brake fluid can melt certain types of plastic???? I was sick after this happened. The back half of the car looks ruined. I figured WTF. Try stripping the front and try to fix the rear. I did the brake fluid thing again but was careful to leave it in for short periods. It did not come off very fast. Only small areas here and there. Then I remembered something. One day my son had a "accident" at the sitters and she threw his almost new Power Ranger figures into Pine Sol. The damned Pine Sol ruined the figures by stripping off the paint. Pored the Pine Sol into a container and put the body into it. Left it for 15 minutes and took it out. Scraped the paint and it came off pretty easy. The hardest part was in the seam lines but a toothbush took care of that too. Word of caution though. On my son's Power Ranger's the Pine Sol left a white film on it. Scrubbing took most of it off but some of it is still there. On the mini Z body I did not notice any film but the body hasn't been left to dry yet. Hope this helps and I take no responsibility if you ruin your body. It worked for my body but not sure if the plastics are the same so test it out first on one you would consider ruined in the first place. Good luck! I have heard of using Pine Sol, I would recommened you thoroughly rinse it off though, before it has time to dry. If it has the power to strip paint, it can also ruin a new paint job being applied, don't assume once it is dry, it is gone.
Brake Fluid takes time to work, but it should not affect the plastic. I have left bodies in it for several days with only the paint being damaged. Brake fluid does what you describe to the paint, makes it a gooey mess, use a toothbrush to scrub at it though. CSC doesn't work on some paints, it depends what the Mini-Z was painted with as to why it didn't work. Whatever stripper you use, you MUST thoroughly clean/wash the car body after you are done, if you don not, any residue can ruin the next paint you apply to it. Hope this helped some. Ray

I have heard of people using Pine-Sol and I wondered if it really works. As far as I ahve seen and heard brake fluid is safe for plastic, I have heard that brake cleaner will dissolve plastic. I usually use oven cleaner. use the backside of your exacto knife to scribe and clean out seam and panel lines.
