Computer Reader

Anyone know of a decently priced computer that I could use to hook into my car computer? I want to be able to read any codes that come up on my Impala. Also do these kits have different adapters to plug into other cars?

I don't want to spend too much, but sometime is will help in figuring a problem out, instead of paying a mechanic $50-$90 to read the codes.

Thanks. -Tom

A simple code reader is all you will get for that price, OBD11 only, many out there in all the parts stores.

Re: Computer Reader

BTW, you will not be able to read "ANY" code as you stated, just the emission related codes. To read "ALL" the codes you would spend thousands of dollars. You have antilock brake codes, body computer codes (this is not the PCM), transmission codes, airbag codes (I think), etc. They don't seem to want everyone to have these codes without paying the big bucks.

No one told me this when I paid several hundred dollars for mine. Of a matter of fact, I pretty much explained what I wanted, same as you, but I found out different after buying one.

Re: Computer Reader

Yes that is true. It would require a lot of programming to get all systems on all cars and if you were to want that it would cost you probably more than six figures and numerous tools.
