remove top speed limiter - saturn

does anyone know if there is a way to remove the top speed limiter from a 97 1.9 liter DOHC motor? or does it even have one (maybe 95mph is just all this motor is capable of?)??

just so you know, if you crash over ~70mph the chance of you living is an extremely small percentage.

signing your own death warrant.

Cars are limited for a reason, the chassis is designed to only withstand a certian amout of speed (i.e. wind resistance & road friction) before becoming unsafe.

Yeah, before you remove the rev limiter, make sure the suspension, tires, body panels, transmission, axle shafts, and bushings, and aerodynamics are up to the task of going faster than 95.

My wife's Tercel is capable of 105, but anything over 90 is just plain SCARY.

NONSENSE... if the man wants to remove the speed limiter, let the man remove his speed limiter.
a downloadable program that plugs into the ECU should be able to change all that stuff.
superchips ect...

Agreed, but it would not be responsible of us to march him into a dangerous situation.

Opinions are like... well you know; everybody has one, but if you take a look at hard facts, many of the "tuner" cars out there today are designed as tinfoil econo-commuters at best, and some even fail at that. Its just best that he know his car's roots so he knows what to modify first. Trust me, I'll be the first to modify a car into something that I want and the first to encourage someone else to do the same, but I start with realistic foundations. I wouldn't build a rock-crawler out of a lamborghini, I wouldn't build a top-fuel dragster with front wheel drive, and I wouldn't start with a stamped-steel econobox as a top-speed blaster. In fact, given the (again, my opinion) completely misdirected foolishness of turning any civic, saturn, camry, or any other econobox into a "performance" car, I think I was pretty nice in my reply.

But, if someone wants to make a performance car out of an econobox unibody piece of geometric tin foil and he/she expects it to blast down the interstate at 100 mph with the same stability and safety of a corvette, I will never sit back and give them the answer without a full dose of truthful fact.

Re: remove top speed limiter - saturn

GreyGoose, are you simply encouraging the lad out of hopes that he will thin the population (by removing himself....)? he he....The only place it's LEGAL to go 95 or better is on a racetrack. But even then, in a Saturn? It can't be safe. Don't they make those out of milkjugs or something? (hyperbole, but it's nearly true).....

By The Way, if you're going the route I've seen other "tunerz" go, expect to see your top speed drop when adding wings, skirts, scoops, etc. They add aerodynamic drag. And mongo tires add rolling resistance. You might gain a few MPH by removing your side-mirrors and antenna, etc. And as bad as it can sometimes be for handling, a significantly lowered car is sometimes more aerodynamic (if the car has a decent shape to begin with, of course)

It's just another way of looking at it....before you seek more power, consider how well you are using the power you already have. By far, though, the thing that'll absolutely make your car the fastest: Flat Black spray paint.

here we go again with those hyperboles...
my theory is that if you are one of those very special people we lovingly call ricers, and you have aspirations of making your 1.5L front wheel drive tin can of a car go faster than my 8.3L Viper (hyperbole), go ahead... its called natural selection. it can be a good thing.
hey, there are times when i have wished i could go faster than the redline limited 95mph my car offers (not a hyperbole this time), however, after coming to my senses, i realize that i'd probly be dead if i was allowed to go 150.

Re: remove top speed limiter - saturn

hell, if you remove the speed limiter, whats it going to do? 101mph?

I've never understood the sudden use of speed limiters on cars. I'm sure it involved a law suit somewhere, no doubt. Someone doing something really dumb.

There's a class action lawsuit against harley davidson motorcycles right now, because many bikers have died due to the bike going out of control at 100+ mph. This is comical from my view, because you couldn't pick a more ill-suited bike to attempt such a thing on. I guess they should be limited to 80mph to save people that actually believe the hype in the commercials that they are buying a svelt high performance motorcycle.

In short, dumb is as dumb does. But dumb peoples relatives can get rich off it I guess.

Amen! Besides, where would we be without all of those people to keep fine shows like Jerry Springer and Judge Judy alive?
