revell RSX and fujimi EVO VIII

hi all
i've been looking at the forum for like half a yr but this is my 1st post
modelling has been a part of my life for almost a decade now
but i'm still at beginner's level
i enjoy building armor and 1/144 planes
cars r new to me
(since i began driving a few yrs ago)
i grew up in hong kong and now i'm in vancouver, BC
anywayz enough intro
letz go on to the modelz
(side note...i do not have an airbrush)

these r the kitz i'm working on now
i was actually gonna start a tamiya celica...
but thought it would be a waste for my 1st model
so bought this revell rsx as my 1st car model
(mostly as experiment)

color is mica blue
didn't have much luck on my 1st try with spray cans
i had drips, bubbles, dust and stuff
end up i stripped some of the paint...
but now u could c the difference....
i'm not sure if more layers of paint would help...??
or should i strip the whole car???

i also bought my 1st tube of polishing compund (fine) a few dayz ago
interestingly... it seem to create more orange peel???
maybe itz coz the paint wasn't glossy enough to show the orange peel??
i'm not sure abt that....
btw...do u polish in straight lines / circular pattern???

engine bay with some crude painting

dashboard

and now on to my EVO
note the tread direction....
fujimi has molded all tires with the same tread direction
guess 1 side of the tirez have to be mounted in the wrong way... :S

the carbon fibre decalz for the spoiler r also horrible
they look like fish net more than anything
need to buy some new onez... haha
btw... and hints on how to apply them?
i've never had much luck with decalz either

the disc brakes are not molded completely....
likely due to the steerting mechanism...

so it led to my 1st experience with sheet styrene and putty
(along with the seatz with no seatback...) =o=

and a test fit

ohhh 4got to mention this...
the steerting wheel is not directly in front of the driver....
itz more to the middle of the car...
fixing this is too much for me
hope no one's gonna notice thislater.... :P
(btw... seatz seem to be undersized too)

thatz it for now
commentz + critizismz r welcomed

Re: revell RSX and fujimi EVO VIII

please refrain from using the "z" in place of an "s".

other than that, it's not looking that bad.
you're right about the texture on the paint but it's going to take a bit of work to fix that depending on where the texture is originating from.
How much work did you put on the primer? There's a thread recently on orange peel and MPWR provided an excellent example of his painting process that you might want to have a look at.

And why can't you fix the steering?
All you need to do is remove plastic so you can reposition the wheel and then fill the gap with plastic.

You know I think the best color on the RSX is that Cool blue color, I was thinking of doing my RSX in a type of blue (Tamiya Clear Blue). Your off to a good start keep us posted.

Re: revell RSX and fujimi EVO VIII

hi there
thanks for the comments

drunken monkey:
sorry about the "z" instead of "s"
i'll remember that from now on
for the orange peel...
i suspect my paint is too old
(it's almost 2 years old now)
so i bought myself a new can
we'll see what happens
i didn't use any primer....
the lady at my hobby shop told me it's not quite neccessary
(i guess not everyone needs to have that perfect paint job done? afterall... 30+ layers of paint and primer sounds pretty crazy to me~!)
about the steering...
i'm still a newbie so plastic surgery is too risky for me
perhaps i'll fix it for my EVO IX?

white R34:
thanks man~!

progress:
not much progress these days
i had work and weather wasn't quite nice
(i do not have a spray booth so i usualyl spray outdoors)
and i got distracted as i fiinished my panzer I
anyway, i managed to get a pretty smooth finish with sanding pad and polishing compound....
however i also got some fairly deep scratch marks~!
i guess a layer or two of clear should be able to fix it
however, since i had removed part of the paint before, i still have the problem about different opacity of color...
maybe i'll just strip the whole car....
or maybe i'll left this car as a painting practice...??
we'll c....
ohhhh and i have a question about clear parts
how do you get those clear plastic to look really shiny and transparent like real glass??
i tried to dip it in future floor polish but i ended up with drips and dust
should i just use polishing compound or modeliling wax??
any ideas??

Re: revell RSX and fujimi EVO VIII

I used to never use primer, and my paint jobs were flawless. I started using primer, and I started getting orange peel. Now I have switched to an airbrush I bought yesterday. I'll see how that works out .

Re: revell RSX and fujimi EVO VIII

The steering wheel isn't too hard to modify...it probably took me 1/2 hour for the entire process. Cut out the plastic on the right side, glue it back at the left side, fill with putty after glue dries. Only a little bit of eyeball "measurements" were used, it defintely adds a lot to the model.
