WIP: Tamiya Tyrrell Yamaha 023
Happy new year everyone!
![]() I started this project a few days ago after I finally finished my SC430. I will be building this OOB, with some CF in the appropriate places. I don't know yet whether to use the kit decals or paint the blue parts... anyone who has built this know of a good color match in a spray can? I think I will try the decals first, if it looks crappy I will go with the paint. Anyways, here are some pictures of what I have done so far... Box: ![]() Cam cover and rear wing support CFed, engine block painted and suspension arms are dry fitted. ![]() I cut off the things on the sides, applied CF decals to the whole thing and used BMF for the valves. The things on the sides were painted and glued back on, and after painting a few more small things, the engine block is complete. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Too many pics of the engine, but I like it. ![]() The monocoque has been primed, and the mold lines sanded smooth. Sprayed with Duplicolor white laquer and then rubbed down with Tamiya fine compound. ![]() The chassis is primed and visable sinkholes patched up. Sprayed with semi gloss black duplicolor. Chrome BMF for the heatsinks and exhaust, and XF-57 Buff is thickly brushed on in many layers to replicated the texture of the wood plank. ![]() ![]() That is all for now, thanks for looking. |

Re: WIP: Tamiya Tyrrell Yamaha 023
Nice start to this model Dave. My 023 is part built and I have put it on hold at the moment... but I will get around to it some time this decade (I hope).

Re: WIP: Tamiya Tyrrell Yamaha 023
Thanks Billy, I saw your WIP and so far what you have is excellent. I went ahead and used the blue decals, they were a pain in the ass but it turned out okay.
Anyway, a small update: Monocoque is decaled ![]() ![]() ![]() I still need to paint some small parts like the wings and sidepods, but it's raining all weekend here. |

You seem to have coped with the blue decals very well... and the detail in the cockpit looks very nice.

Re: WIP: Tamiya Tyrrell Yamaha 023
I know I haven't been posting WIP pics, it's because my own camera broke and I am borrowing a friend's but I can't have it with me all the time. Anyway, the model is finished. Here's a teaser pic... will post a new thread in a bit. By the way, I would like to thank Bill for his help and sending me his reference pics.

Re: WIP: Tamiya Tyrrell Yamaha 023
Hey that was quick. Seems i completely missed this build so far....
Nice result! Two things that i want to note. The "things on the side" of the tray with the velocity stacks ( the intake "trumpets" ...the "valves" are in there ) would be the fuel rails. They take the fuel to the injectors in each trumpet. I'm a bit surprised you CF'd the cam covers. I don't have the reference pictures for this car so i may in fact be wrong but i think the covers should not be carbon fibre but rather some sort of cast metal. Anyway...looking nice:-) |

Re: WIP: Tamiya Tyrrell Yamaha 023
I didn't have any reference pictures to go by when I was building the engine, so I was just CFing where the instructions called for X-18. Oh well, I will keep this in mind when I build Ukyo's car sometime in the future.
