Exclamation Did I kill my starter, please read if you know anything about a cars starting system.

I have a big problem, Im 17 and the only car I have to get me to work is my 89 240, I just learned how to shift without the clutch and I thin it destroyed my starter. Earlier tonight when I got home from work my car stalled when I was pulling into the grass and the side of the road, oops. I tried to start it and it wouldnt. It acted like it would, the radio and the backlight on the clock went off but it didnt make any sound like it was going to start, is my starter gone, and how hard is it to replace it? Did it go because of my clutchless shifting? I was trying to save my clutch by doing that. Please help, this is going to make me die.

Clutchless shifting?

Anyways, if its not cranking when you turn the key it probably is the starter not working. How old is your starter by the way? IF its a little old, this works sometimes when the solenoid is stuck, try getting a metal pole or stick or whatever and hitting the starter a bit to loosen it up. This worked for me for about an extra 2 months when my starter was messing up till I had to get a new one.

My starter was messed up a couple of months ago and if the car is old, which it is, it could be that the problem isnt really the starter but that the starter needs a booster or something to send a better signal. (I took it to the electrical shop after I couldnt figure out what was wrong).

Anyways hope that helps.

Well it doesnt crank at all, I dont know how old the starter is, it could be new or it could be old as hell. The starter is the can shaped thing above the trans kinda infront of the oil filter? or behind, whatever. If thats it would I even need to get under the car to replace it.

it should be on the trans kinda. have to pull the botls out that hold trans to it. dont need ot get under at all really. i change dmine in like 30min when it went out. i used to beat on it with the jack crank that came with car. and clutchless shifting dont save shit. you only really burn clutch wen you drop it and it slips. but you can fuck your tranny up with out using it. and it dont make you any faster as you have to wait on the engine to slow down to hit the next gear. but iof you on passanger side look down under your TB and should be a cylinder sticking off your engine area where wngine and tranny meet.

You dont need to buy a whole starter.
Pull the old one out
Open up the starter
You will see 4 flint like rectangles
Go to your parts store and bring it with you
Ask for that part and do the steps all over again
I think mine was 30 - 40 some, oem part

good luck

OK well I replaced the starter, it was a Nissan starter so its either the same one from the factory or the last person to change the starter really took care of the car, I replaced it with a bosch one. It sounds better than the old one. I have never done this before and it was pretty easy, the hard part was disconnecting and reconnecting the ground cable on the starter.

So your car runs now right? Anyhow, you're not going to save your clutch by "clutchless shifting." Drive properly. The clutch is there for a reason. You are lucky that your problem was just your clutch and not the flywheel, trans, gears, etc. Good luck!

yeah it runs now, I heard about the clutchless shifting, you go from 2nd at like 2500RPM to third and let nthe RPM drop to like 2000 and just pop it in, no grinding, but my third grinds alot anyways like I have to be slow about putting it in third.
