Vtec D16?

http://crx.honda-perf.org/articles/z6swap/z6swap.html

This has page has got my attention, since I'm rebuilding my D16a6 block I figured this may be a sweeter way to go on the head. It mentioned something about getting a vtec controller, where do I get one? Also anybody got any advise or smart a$$ comments about what I'm doing?

Wouldnt the cost of all this be very close to a complete z6, y8, ZC swap itself??? also i have heard that head swaps tend to have problems down the line. If u have the complete cost of everything (head, vtec controller, parts, etc.) please post it. -thanks

personally I'm comparing $800 (less vtec controller, no sure how much that cost) to $1200-$1500, and that's if I do all the work myself.

Yea, definetly not worth it in my eyes. $800 u can get a ZC, little over $1500 (probably closer to $2000) b16.

I'd have to shell out almost $2000 maybe more for a ZC, and it's not worth it since I'd have to drop that much more to buy another engine for parts if it breaks, and a B16 isn't worth it because a rebuildable one is $1500 with usually a bad head plus all of the parts to swap it, too much of a headache. I'd much rather try to find a Vtec controller and have a D16 that I could readily find parts for (though expensive) than either of the other ones.

Where do you get these huge price tags on everything? The most I've ever heard anyone spend for a complete ZC swap including installation was $1500. B16's go for $1200 at HondaMotorsOnline, and they have a start up guarantee with them. And at most performance shops you can get d16z6's for less than $500.

i have no idea why people keep saying the sohc v-tec costs like $800 and to get a zc. sweet jesus! i paid $500 for the y8 and $65 for the rpm activated switch.

there is a more spendy route to go. but you don't have to

A ZC will cost u $499 from hondamotors online. U actually dont need anything else but the engine to get it going. So bam 500 bux a ZC. If u want to replace some stuff stuff like belts and stuff it will cost u a little more but a grand at most(replacing mostly everything). And then u will have a super reliable ZC. I am thinking with a B16 closer to $2500 with mounts, shift linkage, and the rest of stuff u should replace. I think i am gonna go with a ZC for now since it is my first swap, want a swap ASAP, to impatient to wait for a b16 (as soon as i come up with 5 bills i know im gonna order a ZC no matter what i say i want). From what i have read/heard a ZC is pretty dam close to a integra LS if not a little faster and i would love to have that power for now. Trust me u will regret spending more money on a head swap than a ZC could be had for. good luck on whatever u decide on tho.

EDIT:

There u go, $500 for a full d16 vtec. Screw ur head swap unless u can get the parts for free.

well, actually I can get some of them for free those prices I have are from the only "import shops" around, they do not include warranties and do not include any labor so it's my luck on the condition, and with my honda in it's current shape, you can see how my luck runs. You have to take into consideration they have to purchase the engine, ship it in, "test" it which usually means they spin the crank around to see if it's got compression, and mark it up 200-300% so it's worth their hassle. When one shop quoted me $2k on a ZC, I didn't even want to know how much a B16 would be. But I can get a used (120k miles) B16 in need of a rebuild for $1500 but that has the shipping included and you can look at HASport to see what everything else would cost me. One fact is I'm rebuilding my A6 because I have to have this car running before next year, Vtec would be nice but not necessary. A SOCH Vtec head will run me about $350 used, which isn't that bad, and you said $65 for a controller so that's not bad either. Leaving the A6 head on it will bring my engine total to about $450 for the new parts to rebuild my block and labor to have it rehoned and there you have the price of the engine I want to set back in my car. It's by far the cheapest way to go with what I want, but the thought of Vtec intrigued me. Remember, shipping and mark-up is greater the closer to the east coast you are.

you know what? seriously, if you're already rebuilding the a6 and you want to save money, stick with rebuilding the a6.

you can get sick with a d series. port n polish your head. spend a few extra $$$ on a head gasket that means business. if you still have a few dollars get some teg rods and some pistons. then sometime in the future when you save another $1500 you're ready to start talking turbo.

the a6 can can get down like that. of course, the faster you want to go...the more it will cost. just plan to take your time.

you should talk with habib sometime. he's also a believer in the all mighty d series.

I'm starting to take into consideration what you've said and what I just saw in my new Summit Racing catalog I think I'm going with the Z6, but I'll do a ground-up rebuild with full head work. It'll be practically new except with some mods when I put it in. I'll check at the JY for one tomorrow. BTW, you said use 'teg rods and pistons, out of which one?
