Ram Air Package

Is it really worth paying $3000+ to upgrade to WS6?

From what I read and heard, you do not benefit from cold air induction until you reach 5,200 RPMs or achieve 80 mph.

You can always add Ram Air aftermarket for much less on the front end if you find a good body shop to install the hood and match the paint.

I am thinking about this upgrade but may pass up on it because it is more cosmetic than performance unless the intentions of this car is racing it on a track.

i didn't know they made ws6 6cylinders. but yeah, its mostly cosmetic(and i use the term loosely, i find the nostrils way to emphasized, so to look better and different, i would find something with more reserved scoops, but thats just me) but yeah, 3000 is way to much

You can buy V6 kits from several vendors who sell the hoods but a slight modification is required. I initially was referring to buying new and whether $3290 was worth buying the ram air package.

The WS6 isn't just the ram-air, its also suspension upgrades, there is a list on pontiac's site or somewhere that gives a run-down of what the WS6 package includes.

I bought my WS6 because it was the "best of the best" in my mind and thought they looked a million times better then the regular T/A.

In the end, the WS6 cars aren't really much faster (if any at all) then a regular Trans Am, and to upgrade would basically be a waste of money, as far as performance goes.

Save the money and put it into performance mods.
That $3000 can go a long way...

BTW, Suncoast Creations and American Sports Car Designs are the companies that make the WS6 hood. Suncoast's quality is bad. ASCD is actually the company that makes the hood FOR GM to put on their cars, so their fit and finish is top notch!

yeah, me too... I went with the WS6 package more for the looks than for actual performance... although the performance was also a slight factor in my choice. If I was looking to mod the hell out of it and was tight on cash... I'd go without the WS6 package. I'm only planning on minor bolt-on mods since I don't really have the time to do justice to really modding the car.

i would definately spend the 3k extra to get the WS6 package, not only because of the appearence and (slight) performance upgrades, you'll get the rarity of the car as a whole, there are plenty of trans am's and z28's out there but WS6's and SS's aren't seen that often. but thats just me.

The WS6 package doesn't have anything that mods the engine. The only things is has different in the enginebay is the lid + air box, other than that its the hood and suspension.

I don't know anyone who sells the stuff as a package, but you can esily add the stuff yourself. The hood is around $700 plus what it takes to get it painted. The airbox can be bought from the dealer, or see if anyone has one used, i can't recall the price of the lower airbox though, but i know its under $100. If i were him, i'd just buy sub frame connectors, and strut tower brace, maybe lower control arms and panhard bar. The sub frames will really make a difference though. He also may want to buy new rims to match the WS6 looking style, but thats not too important.

I LOVE the Collectors Edition Trans Am, stickers and all, but NOT in the drop top, only the t-tops. Get a limo tint on the sides and read, and you are set. I'd then proceed to get headers, ORP, true duals with turndown infront of the axel, lid, ported MAF, ported TB, SFC, nice set of heads, cam set-up for boost, get forged internals, get my compression down, and drop in a good 'ole blower, get a 12 bolt read end, some 17x11's in the read and 17x9.5s in front, get some sticky drag radials all around, pro 5.0 shifter, lou's short stick, get rid of the rear seats and passenger seat, take out the spare and jack, some carpet, put nice racing seat (light) in for the driver's seat, roll cage, and....oppps, think i went over the top? heh.

Prior to trading in my '02 Firebird for '02 WS6, I was considering adding a new hood and cold air induction. These websites helped me decide who I would order it from.

These companies do not ship hoods to residences so you need to have it pre-arranged with a body shop to take delivery of the hood.

SLP Engineering

Rapid Motor Sports

FT Force

I found this website useful because this guy added a ram air style hood to his Firebird:

Jim's Ram Air conversion

Check out this WS6 website that may provide additional help:

http://www.projecttransam.com/

Although I am not sorry for getting a WS6, I don't think there is much benefit from the cold air induction unless you are racing on a track at peak horsepower.

I have noticed more thrusty performance with the 4 speed automatic transmission over the 6 speed manual transmission when accelerating in excess of 55 mph. It was a nice feeling to be thrown back in your seat.
