looking to buy an A4...

For all you Audi experts, after a lot of thought and polling friends, family, and co-workers, I have decided on the Audi A4 as my to-be daily driver. Generally, I get the impression that most people agree that the 1.8T is a more-than-adequate model. I'm going to be visiting an auction with a friend of mine where he can get some great deals, but I'd like to be sure I'm not going to end up with a lemon, and some of these cars tend to have high mileage. I'm usually a Honda person myself, so I don't know too much about Audi's, other than that they have a pretty good reputation. How many miles are they usually good for? What problems have then been known to have, if any? What should I be looking for when I go shopping for my A4?
Thanks for any help

Ahh the audi 1.8T , it's probably one of the best turbo gas engines... Not performance wise , because if so then we know like RB26DETT JZA80A etc engines , but it's reliable , drivable daily , runs really calm and steady... And it can be modded to hell too (i have seen ones with 500 hp on pump gas , no nos or other "cheating")... The new body style is this year , 02 mostly.... i think in US it's only 02 , in Europe we have had a bunch in the end of last year i think... Be sure to get quattro drivetrain... Then mod it to like 250 hp or so... yeah it'll still be drivable daily... My friend drives a 325 hp 1.8T A4 quattro on daily basis...

ok, well after much thought, i've decided to just sell my beloved prelude *sniff sniff* and use the money for mods on the A4...i don't want to go too crazy on it...i'm going to get some rims, lower it, BOV, turbo timer, maybe a front lip. as for performance, i'm not too familiar with audis and such, although i know more than most females and even some males about modding a honda engine...can you tell me what i'd be looking at to get more horsepower out of the A4? is it just basically the same kinds of mods?

thanks for your help!

I think it's not exactly the same mods... That's if you choose the 1.8T engine... It's basically engine managment (software, fuel injection volume and boost pressure)Reworked cylinder head with optimized flow. Newly designed casting exhaust elbow with flow optimized gas direction.
Optimized turbo to improve low-end response. Corrosion resistant stainless steel exhaust system with a high performance metallic catalytic converter. This takes around 18 hours , and gives you 240 hp...
You can get up to 420 hp but i think like 240-280 is enough and it's still very good for daily driving... The 240 hp should do 0-60 in low 6s and top speed of 155... it costs about 5000$ here... for 3k$ you can get like 220 hp and it's only 5,5 hours of work... About modifing A4s... I guess you want the newest body style, then it's ... if you wanted the old body style then you can have the S4 with 2.7 Biturbo... in europe it makes 265 hp stock... in US i think 250... This one is easily moved to 400-ish hp.. cheap and still good daily driver... There are 600+ hp conversions too...
