For a while now, whenever i start my car cold (even during hot summer days...... cold being i've had my car off for a period of time)...whenever i start my car from being off for a while, i hear a .... grinding or scratchy knock kind of noise comming from the engine compartment for a few seconds, then it subsides.
Perhaps it is the pistons and cams not having oil on them when the car starts (before oil squirters do thier job?)....oil probably all drains to the pan if given a long enough period of time (say a few hours).... Is this potentially bad, having the grinding and friction? Or is this normal with most engines? -Phil |

Well it could be a stuck or sticky lifter. A common problem apprently on the SR20. Theres not really much you can do about it though, but forunatly its not considered deadly for your engine.
However, it could also be a bad Oil pump. This is quite serious, as its possibly not building up enough pressure on start up to fully lubricate the engine. However its quite possible its something else entirly, can you describe then sound with a little more detail? Prehaps stick your head under the hood and get someone to start the car so you can hear exactly where its comeing from. It might be something as simple as a slipping belt.

If it's been doing this for a while and there have been no ill effects on performance or oil consumption, you probably have the all famous timing chain tensioner start up clatter. Very common to the SR20DE.
You can do a search on the digest and prob' find others with the same prob' or go to www.se-r.net and read up on it or do a search on the se-r digest if your a member. This is a very common noise and does not effect the longevity of the engine. Quote:

Timing Chain Tensioner was quoted for 79$ and 90$ (Both a local Infiniti and Nissan dealer....... infiniti was cheaper)
The Infiniti guy said they bought the part alone for 39$, so i dono... Where can i get the tensioner for 32?? |
