I think the pink revell 'custom beetle' I have is gonna get the rat treatment.
I've looked at the PL 'Herbie' kit, and I still wonder if another kit has better inner fender well detail. Is the Revell '60's Beetle' kit better or their vert kit?

VW Beetles are very well covered in scale, all the manufactuers make one and there all fantastic, the best is the Tamiya VW Beetle. which IIRC was just reissued. The PL Beetle is better then the Revell, but the Revell's not bad, just showing its age a little bit

Re: Best VW Beetle kit to build into a 'Rat Rod'
Go for the Tamiya 1966 beetle, it has the best details and with this one, you have a really nice engine. With Revell, yes, you also have an engine, but what a pity

Re: Best VW Beetle kit to build into a 'Rat Rod'
The herbie beetle from PL is great because it is readily availble. Parts are soft in detail, but great to super detail. Tamiya is also readily available, but costs more. The gunze is cool b/c it is the old oval window body. I'd go with the PL kit. Good luck.

Also check out this member' s build. As far as I remember, he did some modification work on the engine bay etc.

I knew Gunze was making an 'Oval' Beetle but I had no idea that their 'High detailed' kits were existing. But, even if it's a 'HD' kit, engine doesn't look so well molded.
Is there anyone around here who built it? |
