Question HELP! Can you tell me what size engine this is? Picture

I'm not a mechanic or even inclined so I'm not sure the size of this engine. This is in a 70 chevelle. If you know what engine it is, any pro's or cons about it?

Thanks!

Look for a flat pad at the front of the passenger side cylinder head (straight down behind the alternator). It should have a number on it. You may want to remove the alternator to get a good look, but you should be able to see it even if you don't remove it. Post this number and I should be able to tell you the size of the engine and possibly the year, horsepower rating, and what models it was used in. If you take off one of the valve covers and post the casting number of the head, I should be able to tell you some info on them as well.

Well, it's a small block, that much is sure. Odds are it's a 350, but there are others. Look at the balancer. If there's "added weight" (cast-in), it's a 400. The flexplate would also have a weight welded to it if it's a 400. How many expansion plugs (freeze plugs) are in each side? If two, is there a "boss" unmachined in the middle? Another sign of a 400.
Getting the codes will make it easy, as stated in a previous post.

Thank you all so much. I can't look for it today as the car is about 60 miles from me but I'll see what I can find out.

The balancer will tell you if it's got a 400 crank, not the displacement. Could be a 383 or 400 with a 400 balancer.

Even if you get the numbers, that will only narrow it down. That will tell you what the block started life as, but little else if its been rebuilt.

But, it will help. When you can, get us those numbers, maybe a picture of the balancer, and if you have the inclination, get us the casting numbers of the heads from under the valve covers. That won't tell us too much either, but it might be a clue. For instance, the chances of their using large chamber heads on a 307 are small, but likely on a 383.
