Re: Will 1/24 SLR be the next project from TAMIYA??
I'd rather have the SLR McLaren.

Re: Will 1/24 SLR be the next project from TAMIYA??
Not going to happen as Tamiya are not prepared to pay what Mclaren ask for the license, hence no Mclaren F1 kit and all of the formula 1 kits have been taken off the poduction line.

Re: Will 1/24 SLR be the next project from TAMIYA??
a Mclaren F1 GTR would be very nice.
That could save me few $$ by not getting the Profil24 resin kit that I can't buy argg...

Tamiya's next project needs to be something a bit more restrained and a bit more mainstream in order to recoup tooling cost licenses for radically complex kits like the Carrera GT and the Enzo.
I suggest Tamiya kit a Lotus Elise as a nice little curbside along the lines of their S2000. Nice, inexpensive, popular subject matter with lots of variations (Exige, anyone?) and Japanese connection (Toyota engine in the USDM version).

Regardless of who develops, the SLR isn't a McLaren. It's still a Mercedes Benz, and a Tamiya staff personally told me that they have no problem getting the license for the SLR. The biggest concern is the sales prospect to convince the boss. My guess is that Tamiya will announce the SLR by the fall hobby show (along with the BAR 006). |

Hiroaki,
That is good news then! Although the official name of the car is Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and it carries the McLaren logo, so it's a pleasant surprise that Tamiya can easily get the license for it.

Re: Will 1/24 SLR be the next project from TAMIYA??
Mercedes and McLaren are partners, McLaren is the F1 counterpart i guess... and in the 50's, the McLaren Mercedes team ran a car in the Formula One World Championship called the SLR...
Mercedes, being known for it's luxury, developed the car's appeal, while McLaren developed the performance end... **disclaimer*** the following paragraph contains my thoughts only, it is not fact. in conclusion, this new Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Maclaren is pretty much a collaborated way to pay tribute to the old F1 racers... |

Well, there's truth in your fact, but you missed one key fact.
McLaren did not exist until the mid-60's, and also was not a German or British concern, but in fact was a New Zealand based constructor of Formula Tasman, Formula One, and Can-Am race cars. Bruce McLaren, company founder, placed the emblem of the Kiwi Bird on each of the cars, and created some veritable legends, not the least of which were the utterly dominant M8 series of Can-Am cars he and drivers Denny Hulme (and occasionally Chris Amon) drove to countless sweeps of the Can-Am series. The Mercedes SLR name comes from the 300SLR sports racer that spawned the 300SL "Gullwing" roadcar. The 300SLR was both the highest height (winning the Mille Miglia in 1955, the only non-Italian car ever to do so, as driven by the incomparable Stirling Moss) and lowest low (the car was involved in a brutal incident at Le Mans in 1955 that left 70 people dead and caused Mercedes Benz to pull out of motorsport until the Sauber Mercedes Group C cars were built) of Mercedes-Benz's motorsport legacy. McLaren is involved simply because they are linked to Mercedes now. While the pairing has produced two World Championship years, the two concerns' true legacies are as separate entities.

I wouldn't mind seeing some more road versions of the Lancers. I know that Fujimi already produce the current Evo's (and the bodies are pretty spot-on), but for Tamiya to produce another kit up to the standard of their Evo 6 would be great, I mean they can use their Evo 7 WRC as the base and create a new interior.
Also, with Tamiya's budget, they should go for some road cars, for example, a Renault Clio V6 or something. Just a basic curb side so more of their budget can be dedicated to another new production instead of blowing a majority of the budget on just one kit. |
