ticking
my engin is making a ticking noise or nocking noise, if i rev the engine it the noise goes faster, any idea of wut it could b and if it can b fixed, i think its a ummm the thing that goes up and down in the ingine, cylender? lol, well i think its 1 of them, i hope its not tho cuz that would b expensive

Your description is vague, but I'll try to be specific as possible. If the ticking sounds like your tapping your fingernail on a table, this is generally the valve train of the motor. Either the tolerances have worked themselves loose (unlikely) or its being deprived of lubrication/oil (more likely). A lot of times changing the oil and oil filter can help (not completely fix) this situation and quiet the noise. Also, not reving the motor high will elongate the life of engine. There are several things you want to check if you have this noise. 1. Oil pressure. General rule of thumb is you want at least 10psi of pressure for every 1k RPM the motor is turning, hence, 4,000rpm, 40psi of pressure. 2. Like I said, how old is the oil? Try switching to a different weight, 20W-50 should help. 3. Valve Lash, the spacing between the rocker and the valve/lifters.
Sometimes on older engines, the oil pickup gets too much debris stuck in the screen and can't suck enough oil to create pressure. If the sound is more like banging on metal with a hammer, this is generally the bottom end of a motor. Usually its a connecting rod saying "Hey, I want out of here"... This type of knock is catastrophic, the only way to remedy the situation is to tear down the motor and rebuild. Hope this helps |

Perfect response and a wonderfully accurate description. I agree 100%.Koreanspeed... when was the last time you changed oil? What is the vehilce? How many miles on it? Some vehicles have solid lifters/followers with the cam. They require periodic adjustment from wear, tolerance, and heat cycling.

Yeah I have a constant clicking noise in my engine too. Like if you hit 2 nails together or something. What could this be? Valve springs? Someone told me it was the fuel injector mis-firing.

If this is a light ticking noise it could be the oil. However, give your belts a look and see if they are cracked. Sometimes a cracked belt can make a light ticking noise and since it is driving the accessories the noise would be RPM dependant.

Nah I just replaced the serpentine belt less than a year ago. Besides it really sounds like it could be coming from the top left of the manifold.
Anyone have more info on lifters? |

as the oil breaks down, there is no lubrication on the lifters since the clearance is usually less than 2 thousandths. They stick and will start to tick. If you have hydraulic lifters, this could mean that the valves need to be adjusted since the lifter can only compress so far. Is in an SOHC engine? Post back w/ more info

if its an SOHC engine, you could fix it really easily. All you have to do is find which one is sticking and take off the valve cover, remove the rocker arms and pull the lifter out and replace it. It isn't hard on my car....i don't know about all cars though.
