Damaged Bolt

I am currenly replacing my cylinder head and have come across a problem and need help. I need to remove my drive belt tensiner in order to get the cylinder head out. Anyways, the bolt head on the bolt is damaged and the wrenchs dont fit snuggly around it, the bolt head is 13mm. Is their any special tool i can use to remove this bolt? How else could i take it out?

Re: Damaged Bolt

A small pipe wrench may work. or a pair of vise grips.

Re: Re: Damaged Bolt

have you tried putting heat to it? You may also want to try to tighten it first then loosen it.

Re: Damaged Bolt

take your vise grips, tighten them on the head of the bolt, as tight as you can, then, while applying pressure to loosen the bolt, tap the bolt head/ vise grips with a ball peen hammer. this is a primitive impact driver of sorts. 99% of the time, the bolt will start to turn, the other 1%, you grind the bolt head to flats on two sides, and try again. or, drill the bolt head off, then use a stud remover to pull what is left of the bolt after you get the tensioner out of the way.

Good Luck

Re: Damaged Bolt

Use all of these suggestions and as a last resort, use a center punch and a drill bit to drill the head off. That will release the pulley and expose the shaft of the bolt. Then you can re-grind the sides flat and really squeeze the vise grips on it. Spend some time with it... love it, talk to it Use some penetrating oil on the threads and allow it to sit overnight. The next day, hit it with a torch and get it pretty hot; enough that the penetrating oil mostly smokes away. Now it should turn out like butter.

P.S. Buy a new bolt
