Question CV Boot Replacement - Need advice.

I recently noticed after hearing a faint pop noise coming from the Rt front aread of the van, that my CV boot needs replacement. This is the outer boot, which after I rotated the axle, I noticed the crush ring on the outside was damaged and the ring needs to be replaced, along with the boot repacked.

I have a Haynes book, however it simply suggests removing the entire axle and replacing it as a whole unit!, As an alternative It suggests removing the lower shock mount and moving the rotor, hub out of the way, its just the damn crush ring.. Is there and easier way, and will disconeccting the lower shock mount kill my alignment?

Or is this a job for a mechanic?
Any tips would be greatly appriciated.
