Question Loose steering...

My dad has an '89 5.0L Mustang notch, lightly modded, and the steering is becoming increasingly loose. Does anyone know how to fix this? I assume only by purchasing a new steering column, and if that's the case, where can I find one?

Steering lose...... you need to elaborate more. Also that so does not mean you need a new steering column necessarily.

The car is all over the road, it wobbles, and can't go in a straight line, especially at highway speeds.

It could be so many things. Check your tie rod ends, ball joints, etc. Also check your tires for chopping and abnormal wear. An alignment would probably help a lot as well.

The more I read the replies, the more it seems like it could be a million things. The suspension is a good thought, it squeaks and groans, especially in cold weather. He's planning on dropping it an inch and a half in the spring. We just got snow the other day, so it's gone for the winter.

Re: Loose steering...

the rag joint in the middle of the steering shaft often breaks. it's broken in my '86 notch. and that car did the same thing while it was running. look at the big part of the steering shaft (right next to the driver's side header) and see if it's ripped. wiggle it and see if it turns independantly of the steering rack a few degrees.
