Question 90 accord won't release my damn key!

My 90 Accord has this stupid little problem going on. When I shut it off, it won't release my key or lock the column unless the little P light shines. I figured out that it's doing that because the car MUST be in Park before it will release the key. I know that this must be something to do with that damn shift interlock mechanism, but what the hell is going on????? By the way, this happens a lot more in cold weather. Hmmmm. Any comments would help, I want my keys!!

Re: 90 accord won't release my damn key!

Hm, I just found this topic and I have exactly the same problem with my Accord EX 90. Unfortunately, the link doesn't work anymore. Is there any other pointer? Thanks a lot.

Re: 90 accord won't release my damn key!

The problem is with the gear shifter position switch located on the left side of the gear shifter on the center console. Usually dirty contacts or the grease they use is becoming an insulator. If the switch doesn't indicate Park, the key cannot be removed. Remove the center console (4 screws) and you will see the switch in the front left quadrant. It can be disassembled and cleaned then regreased (lightly) and reassembled. You will know you have fixed the problem when you shift to Park, and the P lights every time.
