does anyone know if it is possible to fit the M5 exhaust system onto the 540i?
also, can the cats be removed from the system? in south africe we do not have as strict emmision control as in the rest of the world and the unleaded fuel we get here are not the best quality either. it is known to block-up the cats on cars here because of the heavy metal content. |

Hi Jaco
I recently bought a 1999 540 which has the cats removed - there seems to be a problem relating to the lambda / O2? sensors. I am being quoted ZAR8000.00 to replace them - there are 4. The car is not idling properly and has random power when accellerating (sometimes it goes like stink; and sometimes not) Did you get answers to your question; remove the cats, etc? I would appreciate any information you found before forking out the money! Thanks, Chris |

540 Exhaust
Chris,
I sold my 540 a few months ago and went the Audi Turbo Diesel route. (No regrets) Mainly due to escalating problems on the 540 - exhaust manifold, noisy gearbox, water leak (somewhere), viscous fan problems, etc, etc... I haven't had any feedback from anybody on this forum - I guess as South Africans we are not worthy of a reply. Only thing I can suggest is that you try Rob Green Racing in Randburg - they are very good with BMW's and they quoted me about R4K to remove the cats and install a new system - front to back. BMW quoted around R40K per cat to replace. They will also be able to help out on the sensor issue, etc. Their URL is: http://www.rgmotorsport.co.za/NewIndex.asp Hope this helps. |
