eclipse 97 gst convertible - turbo problems?
my question:
what are the symptoms of a broken turbo for this model, how much can i expect to pay to fix it and does anyone have any other ideas about what it may be? my crying and whining as well as the story behind my question: ok so this garbage truck wrinkles up the front hood my eclipse shut so i cant pop the hood till it gets fixed, and the day im driving it to the auto body shop the check engine light comes on. im driving down the highway and im about to swap into 4th gear, and the engine starts shaking, feeling like something gets caught. im not sure what it is and i hit the accelerator (mistake, i know - i thought something was under my wheel or something) to push through it and the engine shakes and the check engine light comes on. i stop, check under the engine and see nothings leaking, cant hear anything wrong. i rev it up and it sounds ok. the lights still on however. so i get off the high way and im ata stop light and the car seems to want to shut off, the revs are down in the 500 range. i keep reving it to keep it over 1k. i let the auto body guy know about this and hes like ok well ill fix the vody then you can open it up and check it out. i get the car back and the lights not on anymore. so im driving and im watching my revs, and my idle is ok, just below the 1k tick. i start to notice shaking when the turbo needle goes over about the 33%/40% mark going upwards - just when the turbo really starts to kick in. the engine revs ok, it shakes when i accelerate hard in neutral, but otherwise doesnt. so i figure my tubos broke or busted or something. thanks in advance, any help is appreciated. |

my friend is having this problem on his 92 tsi awd talon right now. he went to dsm.org and a guy was having the same problem. the problem is a leaky intercooler pipe. what amount of boost does it start shaking?? his and the other guys started shaking at 7 psi of boost. he is gonna have to replace his intercooler piping. i think either the body shop cracked the intercooler pipe or the body shop didn't tighten up all the joints.

it could also be a cracked exhuast manifold. try the exhaust manifold and check your intercooler piping for leaks.
