90 Silverado windshield wipers

My husband's 90 Silverado has wiper blades that jump (don't glide smoothly) over the windshield when used.. He has tried replacing everything over 10 years, obviously except whatever will fix it. Thanks for any suggestions! Melanie

Yes, it does it at all speeds...I think. Will confirm and get back to you. Thanks for the ideas. I will pass them along and let you know if he has tried these things.

Yes, it happens at all speeds. I plan to call our mechanic on Monday to ask about your suggestions. I just learned that they replaced the blades 3 times in the last 3 days, and the arms once. I will certainly ask about the bushings (didn't know they had 'em!)

i'm not sure what else was changed but a bad conection at the motor or a faulty module or worn out motor will do all kinds of weird stuff

Re: 90 Silverado windshield wipers

I had the exect same problem. even with new wipers. I have 1990 silverado 4x4. I went to kragens and the parts manager recommended the better quality wipers. He installed them for me for free. I think they were around 15.00. I dont know what they had but the wipers now move smoothly. they dont jump anymore.

Re: 90 Silverado windshield wipers

You may also want to treat the windsheild itself. The glass will become dirty over time causing this problem. Regular washing will not remove it. There is a glass treatment available to bring the glass surface back to its original condition.

Re: 90 Silverado windshield wipers

If the windsheild is pitted it will make the wipers skip,I agree with Mork, you can treat your windsheild, Rain Ex will coat the glass too, I switched to the Teflon wipers and they are always smooth and much quieter than the factory rubber ones they do cost about $23 ea. but well worth cutting down on skipping and aggrivating noise. Im not a huge fan of Rain Ex due to the hazey film that you sometimes get on the glass but it is an idea that might help.

Re: 90 Silverado windshield wipers

The best wipers I have yet to find are ths Bosch replacement blades. Not just the rubber insert, but the whole thing. (not the arm) I spent almost $40 on them, but man do they work great.

Re: 90 Silverado windshield wipers

I've never run into this problem, but with the fact they've changed blades so much,I'm inclined to believe the problem is with the motor or the way it's mounted. I would check the bushings and also run the motor without the arm installed and see if the drive arm binds or jerks while cycling. I could be something in the wiper motor worn or binding causing the problem.
