I am having trouble with my Mustang GT the rearend drags when I pull out slowly or backup, and when I am going down the road at lets say 45mph it tries to pull. I have an idea on what it is but I don't have the part numbers for it and I lost my owners manual. I think it is my differenital and torque converter, keep in mind I know a little bit about a little bit. I am trying to get this fixed so I can get ready for the races
Can someone please help?

Re: Rearend problems on Mustang GT

Kinda hard to get a grasp of what your asking about. What do you mean by "the rearend drags when I pull out slowly or backup", is the car sluggish, or does it clunk or grind or something? And what do you mean by "and when I am going down the road at lets say 45mph it tries to pull", that it's making the car steer poorly, or something else? Not to sure how your torque converter fits into this either, unless your transmission is slipping or something, but that's a far cry from a rearend problem. Don't know how an owners manual would help you much with any of this at any rate. Not to sure what your going to do with part numbers either, at least till you know a little better what's wrong with it. As I said, kinda difficult to understand what your asking about. A little more info would be helpful. |

Re: Rearend problems on Mustang GT
If it vibrates or feels kind of like "drive shaft wobble" but you dont see anything wrong with your drive shaft(no missing weights, u-joints are tight). Then it is your converter more than likey. Ford had a bad prob with that when they ran mercon4. Try flushing the trans along with cooler and putting mercon 5 back in it. If that doesnt work you will have to replace the converter, and possibly rebuild the trans. If your rearend "pulls" or "doglegs" to 1 side or the other you need an alignment and a "suspension shake down" to fix or find and fix anything that may be wrong there. But we need more info to properly diagnose your car. All you have said is that its a GT. Is that a 5.0 or a 4.6 GT? 1985 or 2000? AOD im assuming since you said converter. Any mods done? ect ect. Thanx.

Another possibility might be a dragging rear brake. Done any brake work recently? I've made a mistake or 2 over the years reassembling the drum brakes that caused similar problems.
