Shaking above 60
My dad is complaining that his 95 Accord EX Sedan is shaking when he's driving over 60mph (not braking, just driving). I have a feeling it's related to his worn out ball joints since those were causing him a lot of problems. Has anyone had something similar happen? Thanks!

I work at a tire shop and we get this all the time. Could be a number of things.
Ranked in order of how common it is: 1. Bad balance as stated above. You could have slipped a weight or just normal driving will change the balance. If you just have tons of dirt built up on the rims this will give you a vibration too. 2. Bent rims. You'd be surprised how common of a problem this is. It really doesn't take much to bend a rim. Also I should add if you have an out of balance rim or badly balanced tire in the front you will be more apt to feel it. 3. Chopped tires. This would be caused be a number of things, mainly bad alighnment. Extreme misalighnment (mainly large trucks) will chop the tires to the point that your tire will wobble on the road. Can also be caused by bad shocks or rims. 4. Split belts/bulges in tire. A tire is basically a balloon given its shape by steel belts inside the rubber. Grazing a curb or something like that can split a belt letting the rubber bulge out from the pressure. Oftentimes you will see that the tire will be out of round or there will be a bulge on the sidewall. If driven on long enough you will often notice that 3/4 of the tread will look fine and then all of a sudden you will have a bald spot on the tire. Hope this helps. This accounts for 99% of the vibrations that we see. On occasion you'll see the dumb*** who has his tires inflated to 80 psi (yeah I'm not joking) or something crazy like that. I would really recommend taking it to a tire shop for a common balance and rotation if its time. Tell them to check for misalighnment and split belts and go from there. |

Re: Shaking above 60
usually it's either unbalanced tires or flat spots on the tires. I'm with the guy above, check that stuff out.
