octane boosters?
I was just wondering what some good octane boosters are? are octane boosters as good as just filling the tank with higher octane gas? does the booster actually change the entire gas in the tank or does it just gather at the bottom? i used some pro blend today, but i haven't driven it enough to notice any difference..

From my experience with octane boosters the gain in power is minimal to nill, mind you I drive an 4 cylinder Acura so I can't comment on its effect on a V8. I tried the NOS octane booster and was unsatisfied with the results.

Re: octane boosters?
Octane boosters or high octane fuel are over rated. In most cases they will actually hurt performance, unless you have a car that runs high compression or has a power adder with a decent about of boost, there is no reason for it.
The reason for higher octane is to eliminate pre-ignition or detonation. This is when the fuel ignites in the cylinder before the spark plug fires. Now for any type of performance you want to run the lowest octane possible without detonation occurring. This will give you the quickest burn possible, and take less effort to make power. Higher octane has a higher burn rate, and will take more effort to ignite and actually cause less power to be made. Also not to mention that running higher octane then required will ultimately cause you to have to run that grade consistently, because of the deposits that will build up on the cylinders. Now here's the gimmick, octane boosters that say they raise your octane by 7 points would have most to believe that if you run 93 grade, you will now have 100 octane with the booster. But in reality its more like 93.7 octane. If you actually have a car that requires such a high octane to perform, then it would be wise to invest in 100 octane race fuel at something like $3 a gallon, and not the cheap gimmicked "NOS" octane boosters.

If you want an octane booster, go buy a drum of race gas. You actually save a lot of money if you go buy a drum, I got a 54 gallon drum of C16, and it only comes out to about $7.70 a gallon in drum form, but when you buy it in a 5 gallon pail you can pay as much as $10 a gallon.

Re: octane boosters?
ok thanks for the information... Yea i used some nitro booster from pro blend and i feel no difference.. i think i'll just stick to 93 octane from sunoco like i normally put in... my car requires premium so... it's funny cause my cousin thinks his 101 octane gas from delta sonic does so much lol.. i think it just smells bad coming out the exhaust lol

But he's right. Basically, the lowest possible octane that you can run, the better off you will be. Don't if this was said yet, but octane is also the rating/speed of the fuel burn. The higher the octanne, the slower the fuel will burn. Matt

However, I can't tell a sh*t of difference in my 4L 6cyl Explorer engine. I just use 87 octane. |
