Whats the deal with Revell?
Ok i have seen several comments about how revell kits aren't up to Tamiya Standards. I don't wanna go buy a kit to find out how, so why don't you guys tell me

Bodys......Need a lot more sanding. There are a lot more mold lines and plastic flash that needs to be removed. Very thick and solid though.
Windows.....Very thick and chunky looking. Chrome Plated Parts....Need to be careful as it can flake off after cutting bits off. Looks to "false" looking at times though. Wheels.....always seem to be molded poorly with plenty of extra rubber to sand off Other Parts.....Not always molded well. Have heavy mold lines that need to be sanded away and some parts dont fit together well. In general if you are willing to spent a bit more time sanding and getting parts to fit better they can turn out to be a very nice kit

Just be prepared to cut and sand casting flash off every single last part.

[for the most part Revell kits are 10 to 15 year old molds and a certain amount of flash and mold lines are expected.] <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Windows.....Very thick and chunky looking. [the new tool kits that are coming from Revell have thin acetate windows] <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Chrome Plated Parts....Need to be careful as it can flake off after cutting bits off. Looks to "false" looking at times though. [it is false chrome plating] <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Wheels.....always seem to be molded poorly with plenty of extra rubber to sand off [again, old molds wear out ] <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Other Parts.....Not always molded well. In general if you are willing to spent a bit more time sanding and getting parts to fit better they can turn out to be a very nice kit and besides if everything fit right and looked right we would'nt have nearly as much fun making it something you're proud of Mike

i find this interesting, because we have a hasegawa honda RA272E that had extra rubber on the tires, our tamiya S2000 has a mold line running right across the front right quarter panel
and there is neither of those problems on our revell ITR (although the tamiya alfa romeo GTV that we have is simply splendid) we are both beginners though, so expect no award winning models from us

I also feel some of their kits don't 'look' right.
I have their Porsche 993 Turbo, and the kit doesn't look mean enough! The wheels don't have the depth, or the body isn't swoopy enough! I could never acuse a Tamiya kit of 'not quite looking like the car'! If your only option for a certain car is through Revell, then by all means go for it! But then I feel some makers kits look odd amongst a selection of Tamiya kits! Don't ge us wrong, none of us are anti Revell or Fujimi, and pro Tamiya! We all make kits and all do it just for fun! But hell, I know a good kit when I make one! |

Revell kits
I've won "Best in Show" awards 6 times (3 in national shows) with Revell exclusively!
It really depends on what you are building. The Tamiya R34 GT-R is awesome but their Ford Mustang Cobra body is waaay-off! Just as Revell's '69 Camaro model is perfectly proportioned and their Porsche models are iffy. Keep in mind, Revell and AMT plastic kits are all full detail!! All of them have engines, some have opening trunks, and all are about half the price of a Tamiya kit. I love my Tamiya kits (I have 24) but when the "detail monster" comes knocking, Revell is the company I keep! :frog: |

On my website, but only some of them are on my it (pics eat too much space!) and they are all American Iron on the website.
I have a few JDM cars, a CLK-GTR (with 160 machined aluminum parts made for it), and other cars in the works. I'm getting ready to buy a domain just for the space!! Russ http://www.geocities.com/murcocompetition/ Last edited by Murco; 06-06-2003 at 03:16 AM. |
