Here's a strange problem I hope some one else has come across.
My 1990 Z24 runs all around town all day with no trouble, however, after about an hour drive the trouble starts. It goes down the highway just fine, but when I slow down (such as at an exit), it bucks and wants to die. It will die a time or two and than will take off and be fine. What gives? I have replaced the EGR and 3 injectors recently (to fix other problems). My thinking is that the converter is confused and not unlocking. Is there a sensor that governs the lock-up function that could be messed up? Thanks, |

Yes... you have a transmission Torque converter lock up switch... its located on the front side of the transmission, facing the radiator. It has 4 wires i believe. i'm pretty sure its the only electrical connection you will find there. what you can do is unhook it, and drive normally, .. see if the car acts up. If it stops bucking and dieing... you will have to get the sensor replace. you can drive without it, but over time it may cause some damage.

I had a similar problem and called a transmission place. They told me to drive it there and to keep it under 35 the whole way. Evidently the "lock" occurs at 35+. They said that trash built up and wouldn't allow the locking plate (that may be the wrong term) to disengage. They cleaned it for about $250 (eight years ago) and I've never had the problem since. Hope it helps.

I have also had problem with both of my cavaliers doing this and several friends and as the others suggested unhook the sensor but just be sure to keep on eye on the automatic tranny fluid becase the extra friction tends to burn it up
