just purchased a 1994 S-10
got a super deal at 1500, only 62k miles, the most glaring problems are a/c is dead, has no charge, and the muffler is shot, am contemplating removal of the converter and goin to some type of rumbling muffler, anyone know what problems could be faced by doing this or if its even worth fooling with, many thx

I have a '94 4x4, and have replaced the muffler and tailpipe two times in 172k miles. The rest of the pipes are still good. I would not remove the converter (you'll feel better knowing that the Feds won't take a financial interest in you). You can get a bolt on pipe that goes from the converter to the muffler and then get your specialty muffler to fit that pipe and the tailpipe. I put a Thrush turbo on it the first time and it was OK, but the second time I put a "cherry bomb" style (straight thru, glass pack) and it has mellowed out very well. Just enough rumble for me.

No reason to remove convertor. If you feel the truck has been running bad and it might be backed up just replace it with a hi-flow cat. I got one from ebay for about $42. Summitracing.com has them cheap too.
On my 92 I bought a set of Edelbrock headers and y pipe. THen installed a new high flow cat. Went straight back to a Flowmaster 2.5" in and 2.5" out 40 series muffler and then i just installed a turn down pipe after the muffler. My truck sounds better than a lot of full size trucks with the big pipes and duals out the back like we are all so use to seeing now. The truck sounds good and runs awsome on the highway now. But i think I have lost some mid range power. I have talked to many techs that say a loss in back pressure could cause this. And that my vehicle (computer) would be sensitive to this. It sounds so good though I dont want to change it. |
