I have a 1994 grand cherokee, the engine will cut out once every 100 miles or so, and sometime won't start when its cold. I can be going down the highway and it just dies, I will wait ten minutes cranking the engine intermittently then it starts and runs fine. I also notice that when it dies and I'm cranking the engine it doesn't appear to flood. I'm thinking it might be a relay problem, especially since it can happen sometimes when it's cold, and I have already replaced the Distributor core, cap, rotor, wires, coil, and the computer. I would like to thank any all replys in advance.
One other thing the engine is not registering any codes, the check engine light isn't going on. Last edited by cholley1066; 12-29-2003 at 06:18 PM. |

It turns out that my problem was related to a loose Negative battery cable, as soon as I tighten it all my problems went away.

It turns out the coolant sensor message has disappeared since I tighten the battery cable, but last night the car stalled again. I just replaced the Fuel pump relay and the Auto shutoff Relay, now I must wait and see.

I had this problem last year in the cold. It finally died all together and I determined it was the fuel pump. Sounds exactly like the symptoms I had.

Back to the drawing board
I drove it for 350 miles and it just did it again. Every time I think it's fixed it dies again. I can't understand why it's not throwing any codes. My mechanic wants to replace the main computer located on the passenger side firewall, but I had that replaced at 103K. People continue to indicate that the problem is with the Crank position sensor, but wouldn't that throw a code if it was bad?

I had the same problem
Just that I had a 1998 and when I went to a local mechanic he assured me nothing was wrong with my jeep. I then took it to a jeep dealership and they said it was the idle sensor and the fuel pump. $600 dollars later it is back to norm.

I'd bet my paycheck on fuel pump. Next time it stalls and won't start, open your drivers side door, put the key in the off possition, lean out of the jeep a bit and turn the key as far as you can without starting the jeep, you should hear the electric fuel pump in the gas take making noise. If not, the pump is not working. The strange thing with the pump is that it exhibits the type of behavior you are describing before it dies all together. Mine also acted up in the cold. Once I replaced it, all was fine.
