Cheapest way to get low 11's out of a Fox body 'stang?

What would be the cheapest route to go to get low 11's out of a 87-93 Mustang GT? Would it be to mod the 302 or buy a 351 (C or W, im not sure which I would preffer if I went this route. Input here would be appreciated aswell.) I want this to be a street/strip car and perhaps even roadcourse once in a while.

If you wouldn't mind, please tell me what engine you would use and kind of things you would do with the car to meet the needs I mentioned above (low 11's, 302 or 351(C or W, not sure), street/strip, roadcourse as main use). I have some general ideas but would like to compare them with your guys' thoughts.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Re: Cheapest way to get low 11's out of a Fox body 'stang?

i may not be a genius when it comes to cars, but i think an easy/cheap way to get to low 11's without blowing anything up would be to get new pistons, rods, all things of that sort, throw on a complete vortech supercharger kit(pulleys, high flow fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator), new heads and cam, and possibly even spray. 4.10 gears would also be a great help getting you into your powerband. of course a good set of headers, an h or x-pipe, and a catback exhaust would aid the supercharger. drag radials or even M/T slicks would help with traction along with some upper and lower control arms. o yeah and a new MAF sensor, computer and throttle body. a buddy of mine has an 89 gt with custom cold air intake, short shift kit, junkyard headers, MAC h-pipe, MAC exhaust, and 3.73's and hes running 13.8's. i constantly see stangs with stock internals and street tires running 12's with just the vortech system alone. hope this helps. im guessing for all of these things with install would probably be around 8k

If you're looking to replace the stock engine look into Keith Craft... They're based about 45 mins from my house and I watched a stang racing on the street last night running on radials with a cheaper Keith Craft and was feathering the gas and burning up the tires down the whole strip... staying no more than 2 car lengths down from a TA on ET Streets with serious mods... Keith Craft is a GREAT engine builder... Worth checking out

Toss a solid set of heads and an intake on the stock block (i'd go with a set of twisted wedge heads + track heat intake) bolt on pretty much any blower kit, s-trim, t-trim, procharger, novi 2K, or any turbo kit, toss some slicks and other minimal mods on and go.

BTW. If I go with a new engine, it will probably NOT be a crate engine. I will probably drop in a rebuilt one.

Thanks for all the tips guys. Keep em comin

i like the 351W, took one out of a '79 ford truck, tore it apart, and i'm slowly rebuilding it.

if you want 11s, think about your transmission. auto or manual, if you put any sort of power through it you'll break it fairly soon. if you have an auto, get a converter, or clutch for manual. make sure the tranny is rated at the amount of power you're gonna put throught it.

If you want a road course car go with a 302. You will be staying in a higher rpm range and you cant beat a 302 bottom end for withstanding high rpms. If you wanna drag get a 351w and I can tell you how to easily get 500hp out of it, thats flywheel. Just depends on the rpms you wanna turn and the money you wanna spend.

Re: Cheapest way to get low 11's out of a Fox body 'stang?

Another question I have is how easy is it to get around 500 horse out of a 351W N/A? Is it even possible? Money isnt too big of a deal as I have around 500-1000 dollars a month to dump in to this.

Anoher thing is, I don't want nitrous or forced induction in my car because once I get the engine going, I want it to be as reliable as possible, and last a long time despite all the power it is producing. I know neither of these pose any big threat to your engine unless you get careless with them, but they will reduce the life of the engine a bit. Plus, I just like naturally aspirated engines

OK The absloute cheapest way to get 11's out of the car is to go to a tool rental store and get a bad ass saw and cut off every single body panel...cut off caty convertor and your set...240 hp with 800 to 1000lbs would easily pull 11's...prob low 10's....

Dude your kinda fighting yourself buy saying strip/road street car. If I was building a road car it would be an ultra hi-reving 302. If it was a strip trick it would be a stroked 351W. Also they suspension set-up i would go with would be something totally different for each. So which one would you be more biased to is a question.

probably more biased towards street/roadcourse/autocross because i think they are all fun types of racing, but would also like to have it go fast in the 1/4 with a pair of slicks on.

Does that help at all?

Are you kidding? The 302 block is notoriously weak, that would be my absolute LAST choice for a naturally aspirated setup!

For your 500HP street 351W, that won't be that hard to achieve with a few more inches. A 10:1 408 with a good set of heads/intake and even a fairly mild cam would be able to make 500 HP and 500+ ft-lbs.
