Twin battery setup

Anyone know how to create a twin battery setup for a 2000 Silverado? Ideally, both batteries would be charged simultaneously thru the charging system, and the user would be able to easily switch between batteries at will.

I plan to do some off-roading with my Silverado 4x4, and it would be a nice backup power source to start the truck in case the primary battery craps out, or if accessories need juice.

I don't know alot about electrical work (but I do have an electrical tester), so a layman's explanation would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Twin battery setup

I'm gonna do the same thing. (for my stereo amps) I'm gonna get a stock Chevy Aux. Batterry tray that goes behind the radiator overflow. Then I'm gonna put in an Optima Yellow-top Deep Cycle. I'm gonna run one thick power line down to the starter with a battery switch in the line so its not always connected. (so I can switch the 2nd battery on to start the truck when the primary dies). Gonna run a thick line off the negative side to a good ground. (engine block probably) Then I'm gonna run a power wire over to the Alternator with a battery isolator in the line, so no current can be robbed from the primary to run the stereo, and also so power wont be taken from the aux. to makeup for a low primary.
So there will be 3 wires hooked to the aux battery.
I'm kinda rambling, so if this didn't make sense, let me know.

Re: Twin battery setup

Visit a marine site/shop.Many larger boats have duel batts. with a isolator switch . This will let you do "bat 1" "bat2" "both" or "off". Using this setup will need no extra starter connections.
