Question JDM Honda Valve Color, & Spray ?

Hey everyone. As some of you know, I've put the Skyline and the Stealth on hold to build a JDM styled turbo Acura ITR. I've seen quite a few honda valve covers claiming to be JDM, but were several different colors. I found one on google that had all the numbers and everything to match and is in a 94, 95 itr. It's the same 1.8 DOHC motor. My question is, it's black, so are all JDM valve covers black? what is the best black for it, gloss, matt, flat? I said matt and flat, because my testors says matt, and it gives a different dried appearence than the flat spray I work with.

My next question. I've seen alot of honda colors, and I was wondering, does anyone know if any automotive paints make the Honda Electron Blue featured on the SI, or somethign close to it. I've searched on AF, and come up with nothing.

any feedback is appreciated.

For motor specifics, you could ask here:
Honda/Acura > JDM Motor & Parts info/chat

You might have to get the blue custom mixed at a paint shop; it's fairly unique, so you'd have a hard time finding an off-the-shelf match.

Re: JDM Honda Valve Color, & Spray ?

Black is a JDM motor b18c1, b16a1,2 h22 and most other JDM motors
Red is a CTR/ITR b16b and b18c5 and Prelude h22 Type S motor
Blue is a JDM Accord motor h22/h23

You can get the EBP color from PPG they make it for Honda ..
95P Electron Blue Pearl is the paint code..

And if you are looking for the color they used on the 92-95 Civic Si and the 94-95 Del-Sol and Integra it was :
B62-P Captiva Blue Pearl

Hope this helps

What he said, as far as stock valve covers go.

Basically, black goes on any DOHC Vtec Civic or Integra engine besides the two Type R's. Those are red. That's why in the U.S. the Civic Si has a black valve cover, as does the Integra GSR, but the Integra Type R has a red cover. In Japan, the Civic Type R has a red cover, also.

I would paint them flat. The paint on the 1:1 is textured and flat, so when painting the valve cover (be sure to strip off the chrome, where applicable) the paint should be flat as can be, and a not-so-smooth paint job would actually look better (uniform, but not smooth).

A little more info: Spoon uses a trademark yellow valve cover on the cars they race (though often leave red covers on their consumer engine build-ups) which is also a flat, textured paint. If you are making a turbo, Spoon would be inappropriate though. Mugen paints their valve covers a medium-dark gray. This paint is actually smooth, and semi-glossy.

Of course, throw enough money around and you can get it any color you like. But that's the story for Civics and Integras from the factory and from a couple awesome Honda-only tuners.

Re: JDM Honda Valve Color, & Spray ?

Thanks for the replies. I'm guessing the flat red would look the best for this car, right? I'm thinking of having a local paintshop mix the color. but I need a new airbrush needle thing. It kinda got knocked off the cabinet and the needle point on the front, I have no clue what it does, broke, now the paint gets clogged. Any color suggestions that would be close to the blue on the 95 si coupe?

The Testors Saphire Blue Pearl is close if you spray a base coat of Tamiya Silver Leaf or a some bright silver and then use the SBP as a mid coat ..

Here is my JDM turbo b16 the turbo is a inferior turbo kit thoe. I am scratch building a turbo for it ..

If you are going to do a turbo car i would do a turbo gsr rather than a turbo ITR as the b18c5 is built for all motor even thoe it is a scale model it would just sound better .. Thats just mho but its your build ...

Here are the specs on the b18c5:

Integra Type R. B18C5. 1.8L DOHC VTEC. 205HP. 10.6:1 Compression

The compretion ratio is to high for turbo.

Hope this helps

Re: JDM Honda Valve Color, & Spray ?

That's cool. But I think, to be different, I'm going to do a gloss black valve cover. You've seen the turbo motor, or what I have so far in my sig, so it's a huge turbo, had to push the radiator way forward for it to fit. Since it's going to represent a car I saw on MTV's True Life: I'm A Street Racer, yeah that one, with the dark blue 99 rhd ITR, although it was all-motor. I want a 450hp beast. Plus, I have some laffing gas for it too.

Thanks for your interests and posts. All your information has been very helpful. BTW, I have some Krylon chrome spray paint. Could I lay that down with grey primer under it, and do the sapphire blue over it?
Thanks.

I would tend to agree here. While, conceivably, you could tune the Type R motor to accept and work with a turbo, there really isn't much point. It would be a nefariously quirky. Very unreliable. And throttle response would most likely be worse than the naturally aspirated engine.

Though while I wouldn't do it, it can and has been done. Just it seems you've been all about realism of late, which I think rocks, and a GSR motor would be more... realistic I suppose.

Re: Re: Re: JDM Honda Valve Color, & Spray ?

I've got some scrap plastic. I'll give it a shot with that. Thanks for your comments. I agree, the GSR would be better, but, if I wanted a turbo teg, it'd be a type R, or RSX-S. Thanks for your input. Btw, lance, got any pics of the teg?
