Question 1991 BMW 525i

I am about to buy the above mentioned car. I got to drive it off the lot while the loan is going through.

Here is the problem. There was approximately a slight bit under a 1/4 of a tank of gas left. As I was driving over an overpass I pressed down on the gas and it did not accelerate. I pumped the gas a couple times and it continued on. The "Check Engine" light came on and the Empty tank light came on. After leaving the gas station the "Check Engine" light had gone off. (I had pulled over after the light had initially come on..turned the car off..back on..and it remained on until the gas was put in) So I drove around for about 3 days. Racked up what the gauge said was 175 miles. I was heading to work and saw that again, there was slightly under a 1/4 of a tank. As I got on the freeway, I accelerated and there was no response. I pumped it and it kept going. I got off the freeway and on to the residential streets and it did this again. No response to my pushing on the gas. Then all of a sudden the "Check Engine" light came on and the empty gas light came on to. I turned the corner and ran out of gas. Is there a problem with the gas gauge? Maybe the fuel line? There are approximately 121,100 miles on it. Thanks in advance.
