91 automatic trans.

I swapped a 90 2.9 from a 5speed into a 91 3.0 auto and am having trouble connecting the elec. to the tranny. I had to keep the 90 wiring harness and it dosen't match the 91 trans. I"ve tried looking up different wiring diagrams and thought I had it figured out but only successful in getting backup lamps to work. Car runs drives ok but no overdrive or neutral saftey. Thank. RangerMike.

Re: 91 automatic trans.

sorry mike, considered not interchangeable, because the 3.0 tranny runs through the computer.either have to put the 3.0 engine in with it along with the computer and wiring harness from bumper to bumper, not feasable. best bet is to find a tran. from a 2.9 found in 1986-90 ranger/bronco.you can adapt the back up light wires but not the OD. I once put a 4.0 in a 86 bronco.it was a major job,but you got to keep the like eng/trans/wiring harness/computer together.i'll reasearch my wiring diagrams and get back at you.

Mitchell thanks for your input. I still have the harness and computer for the 3.0 in my garage. Didn't the 90s also come with automatics as an option? It would seem to me if I could find the right wires to splice it should work. Of course I haven't been able to do it yet. I agree it wasn't feaseable to swap the way I did. Nobody told me how hard it would be but once I got so far with it I was determined to make it work and it does just no overdrive now. If I have to I'll drive the wheels off it like it it is. Mike

If the overdrive is controlled by a solenoid in that automatic You could just hook up a switch and click the overdrive in whenever You want it. Some automatics also have lockup, and it can also be put on a switch.

Thanks ridinvegas that is a good idea I'll try that if I can't figure it out otherwise. I have a plan but have been preoccupied with more important things. Eventually I'll get back to it.
