While getting some barely-under-warranty work done on my beloved 2000 Camry, i okayed a tire rotation and an oil change (both were just about due). The shop called, saying I needed to come in to see a problem with the right rear strut. The now-rear tire was rubbing against the strut. They claimed I shouldn't even drive the vehicle away, but have them take apart the strut & spindle to figure out what's going on. I felt the inside of the front tire (that had been on the back), but the wear felt identical to the other tires (raised lettering on the tire intact, no shininess or slickness on the inner wall). When I asked about this, the shop manager sputtered that I needed to "get out from under there because these guys have to get to work." When I returned to get the car, the story was that the wheel previously on the rear was just the right width, but the other three wheels were too wide. (then why are all the tires the same dimension?)
granted, i'm just an "ignernt female," definitely not a mechanic, but something here just doesn't seem right. Is there truly a problem with the suspension, or should i just suspend having these yahoos work on my vehicle? |

Re: am i getting ripped off?
Did they spin the tire to show you the strut rubbing it? Have you backed into a curb lately? If you've taken it home do you smell burning rubber from the rubbing? I'd jack up the right rear and be sure you chock the front wheels so it doesn't roll. Then slowly rotate the tire while having someone watch to see if it rubs. The tire width excuse doesn't make sense unless you have unmatched or oversized tires. The rear wheels can get out of alignment and should be checked periodically. That's why I asked if the rear wheel had hit something or perhaps bottomed out in a pot hole.

DO you have after market wheels on the car.if so possible spacer was missing. If all the tires is the same size before the rotate and it didn't rubb before ,why would it rubb after the rotate.did the dealer do the job?
The only time it will rubb the stut is if you hit a curb or the tire is not ment for the car/missing spacer.somthing sound funny here? I would have a second shop or dealer look at it. |
