Ready to give up! :-( Nobody can fix my Cougar correctly!

I am frustrated beyond words. This has been going on for almost 2 years now. My Cougar is a '93, XR7. When I come to a stop, then try to go again, I step on the gas and nothing happens, it goes all the way to the floor, no gas goes to the engine and the car dies. Most of the time I can get it started again IF I repeatedly step on the gas while turning the key, it won't just start by the key alone. I had it fixed almost 2 years ago, and they put in a new fuel pressure regulator. It ran fine for about a year, then it started happening again. I told them what the solution was last time but this time they said it was a bad sensor and the idle air control valve. Then it ran perfect for a little over a month, now it's doing it AGAIN!

1. Why would it be two different things, for the same problem?

2. Why didn't either solution fix it permanently, is there something else that could be happening that causes the problem further back in the process?

I'm just shooting the breeze here, but a few inexpensive things you could look at or try......

- fuel filter
- check fuel pressure at rail
- make sure ports where IAC (idle air control valve) are clean not plugged. Same with EGR valve and ports or pintle on EGR valve not stuck.
- temp sensor on intake

Good luck.

I did try the fuel filter the very first time, that didn't do anything. I will write these other suggestions down and show it to the guy at the shop when I take it in! Thanks!
