d series horsepower

what's an educated guess on the kind of horsepower you can get out of a naturally-asperated d series engine? the restriction is about $2000

d series, naturally-aspirated, and horsepower don't really fit in the same sentance that well...

um... just doing your basic i/h/e is going to take up over half your $2,000 budget. other than that maybe throw in a mild performance cam? like a regrind maybe there are at least a couple of companies that will do it, Delta being one of them

good luck!

Re: d series horsepower

you might get a whopping 140-150 hp at the CRANK with that... and I could easily be guessing a bit high with that number I dunno a vtec d series only puts out like 125 stock at the crank

Re: d series horsepower

ok then how about if the standard i/h/e has already been done. i know it's not a platform that one would choose to build up but my question is more for the fact that that is the spare engine i have and want to do something to it during the rebuild. i'm apparently not looking for ungodly hp but just something to give me something above stock

Plenty of power can be had from your D series motor for $2000 check out http://www.d-series.org/ they will have a better idea for you.

Not to plug or anything, but us guys at www.alternativehonda.com have what we call "operation B-sting" in the makings right now, which gives a $4000 ceiling (what we consider the cost of a B-swap and some trendy bolt-ons for it to the average Joe) but taking the funds into building up a D-series motor for equal gains. With the $$$ invested correctly, I will go and say gains of 30-40hp could be seen if $2k was the limit. Yes, a 170hp (at the crank) could be seen with the right mods off a D16Y8 (6th gen EX motor). Take into consideration a cam with a 272 spec grind on it would only run you $100 once said and done through www.deltacam.com That alone would boost power by roughly 15hp A nice port and polish, some better springs and retainers, some cam timing adjustments and you can see gains higher than you might expect. Of course milage may vary, and this is when using the EX motor, verses the 20hp less Y7 DX motor.

Going turbo or all-motor?

Actually it IS going turbo. If it were to be all motor, the cost of sleeving and decking the block would exceed the cost of the parts used for mods.

You're comparing apples and oranges now, with a turbo sohc vs all-motor dohc. For $4,000 the sohc will likely sweep up an Si, and probably even my car, but then you get into reliability, having to warm up/cool down (maintain) the turbo, and all the other real world drawbacks.

Let's do a quick guesstimated rundown of parts/prices
Greddy turbo - $1,600
Greddy BOV - $275
Fuel pump/mod/injectors - $400

-I'd say about 160hp with these

-optional-
oil catch can - $100
Greddy intercooler - $1,000
Greddy Profec B boost controller - $400
A/F & boost gauges and pods - $175
Either a svafcII - $350, Greddy comp - $600, or AEM computer - $1100 for some type of management

-200 to 220 reliable hp (up to 9psi) with these added

$3950 down to before the management mods so tack on another $350-$1100 and then some for shipping of those parts, and proper dynotuning. I'm probably off on a couple parts, but you get the idea.

Perhaps comparing those two... But to be cost efficient and equal to the cost of a B-swap, turbo is the only feasable choice. The following is quoted by Aaron, the resident builder/creator of this project himself from the thread on this topic on the AlternativeHonda message board:

Quote:
I thought I'd update a little of the pricing issue. THIS is without hookups, just sample prices. I am still gonna exploit the hookups when this goes to road, but the pricing will show anyone can do it.

1. Garrett T3/T4 50-trim compressor with .57AR turbine stage 3 wheel- $700 from AGP Turbo
2. Exhaust manifold will be a one off welded up from pipe laying around "The Playground". For anyone else they can just buy one for $479.
3. 38mm Tial external wastegate- $230
4. TWO Mitsubishi 1 Gen BOV's crushed(term to be explained later). I own one from my WRX(stock equip actually) and the other I found n the parts bin.
5. Piping for IC and fabbing. There are 2 ways to do this yourself though both of them involve cutting. One is a chop saw and the bends (availble from RRE) and tack welding them with your wirefeed and having them tig'd. The other is cutting them by hand and duct taping them then having them tig'd. Either way- $230 for pipe, $80 for tig.

Total- $1889 (ours will be $479 less cause I am doing some of this for us and saving some money)

Injectors are $440 shipped from Marren for 860cc Denso's. The fuel rail I already have, though a STOCK FUEL RAIL will flow enough fuel to supply 600hp.

Of course this is for the more mechanically inclined that don't need to rely on a kit or a shop installing the junk for them. Anyone that takes on a project such as this shouldn't need a shop to do most of their dirty work for tham anyways.

Re: d series horsepower

ya know i think i'm just going to go and get a b18 from an ls. i've been looking and i just think i should go dohc, even though i have the "spare" engine already. thanks everyone..... i like the stock hp and think with some small $$$ i can get some bang for my buck. what tranny should i use for a racer, for the lowest price of course.
