Interior Painting problems?

Alright I've seen all those nice interior paint jobs. So I want to try it out. My question is how do they get the dash to have that smooth finish? My dash is vinyl so wouldn't it come out still looking like vinyl?
or do I have to sand it or fiberglass it? Should I rent a sprayer and do it that way? Or can I do that Krylon Fusion thing that I have been hearing about?

Does anyone know of a good place to order things for exterior painting online? I want to repaint my car this summer and I'd like to find a good place to order the primer, base, and clear coat from. I just want a nice black so that shouldn't be too hard.

Thanks.

Re: Interior Painting problems?

I just recently used that Krylon Fusion paint and it's a dream to use, easy quick drying and has a nice shiny look to the vinyl. I recommend using it. nice and cheap to btw.

How to install racing seats? is 88 after all
Can I install any new kind of gauges for it?

i would strongly recommend not repainting your car yourself unless you have the expierence and supplies. if you go to a large auto body/paint shop it is much cheaper than smaller places- the place i went-maaco- did an excellent job and a basic paint job with clearcoat, etc. is only 500$ mine was 900 cuz i got blue and silver metal flake and i had them do the door silles which is extra. it was also extra because the guy who did the original repaint didn't have the expierence aor the tools so it was cracking and blistering. auto painting is alot of work. be careful if you decide to try it yourself. good luck

Re: Interior Painting problems?

I painted the very top piece of my dash black and it is so unbelieveably shiny...when the sun hits it, it glares onto the windshield and I cant see the road as good as I used to. Looks pretty cool though.

Re: Interior Painting problems?

Myself, its just spraypaint. It used to be grey so I knew it needed a quick upgrade. I didnt use Krylon Fusion for that though...it was probably generic. Stays on the sides just fine, but the front is chipping now...which should be expected of course.

Re: Interior Painting problems?

Do not sand your vinyl dashboard. Sanding vinyl will make a huge mess and you will be screwed. There is a company called SEM that makes the best vinyl dye out there. You can get many different colors and in a spray can. You will want to get SEM vinyl prep also.
check out this link they sell SEM products

Re: Interior Painting problems?

I washed mine after taking it off...then let it dry, sprayed on a coating of cheap primer, then coated it 5 to 6 times with an hour or so between each. Let it dry about a day and then put it on and left it so it could dry more. It will be sticky for awhile so dont get ashes from cigs on it or anything...those are bad. Stay out of sunlight too if you can. Its been a week and mine is good now...I can wipe it down with cleaning wipes and everything.

Re: Interior Painting problems?

1st removal panels from car.
2nd clean panels throughly...must remove any build up of dressings...like armor all.
3rd if you want the parts smooth you must sand them with 220 grit sand paper. Sand till all the grain is removed and the parts are smooth.
4th wipe parts down with something like denatured alchol to remove sanding dust and oils.
5th prime...follow the directions on the primer for best results. Also you can lay down a couple of heavy coats. Let it dry then sand smooth with 600 grit wet sand paper. Then a couple of coats of primer again. That is optional but gives a better finish.
6th while following the directions of both the primer and paint paint your parts.
7th again with the directions clear coat the parts.
8th allow to dry and reinstall.

I mention follow the directions alot. That is because all paints do not go on the same. They have different "flash" times. That is the amount of time the paint has to dry before a recoat. Also there is an amount of time the paint can sit before you can not clear it. The time is very important for proper adhesion. Just read the directions and you will be fine. If you can get a test piece of plastic to try it on first.
