Question Problems with oil or gas?

I recently ran into trouble with my 96 neon, which i had never had. I was pulling into my parking lot and the gar began to chug a little bit and my oil light came on. I immediatly parked and turn off the car. there was a bad oil smell as i opened the hood. I found that my oil was completely gone and i had just changed it myself 3 weeks before. So i immediatly put 3 quarts of oil in and tried to start it up again, it started and idled the car would either stall out or near stall out if i pushed in the gas if i let off it would idle fiine. Very confusing to me. I am a college student with very little money so id like to figure this problem out without the use of a mechanic and having it towed or whatever else. if anyone has any helpful info on what this could be i would greatly apreciate the help.
