How can you tell?? (rims)

How can you tell if a rim is 4x100 or 4x114 etc? A keep getting little deals on wheels but, when I ask if they are 4x100 or 4x114 they get confused. One guy said the rims came off a civic, then 20 minutes later he said they came off of a Accord. Then I said, "accords and civics have different bolt patterns" and he said just bring the car up here so we can see. in which I didn't, because he sold tires and a few sets of rims and he didn't know what he was talking about. Bad business!
The other person I ran into yesterday had a set of rims and he didn't know the lug pattern either. So is there a way I can tell???

usually there will be a casting on the inside of the wheel that will say the wheel size, depth, bolt pattern, etc.

My accord has my stock civic wheels on it, well it did anyway. 89 and below accords are 4x100 and 90+ accords that are 4 lug (minus the V6 accods) are 4x114.3. So he could have been telling the truth.
