Sounded like someone put a bomb in my engine

Me and my cousin were driving around town last night (my cousin was driving) and on our way home he was accelerating an when he hit about 3K rpm's a extremely loud boom came from under the motor, smoke covered the car and it sounded like stuff was hitting under the car and flying out behind us. We idled to the side of the road, looked behind us and all my oil was laying on the ground behind me. The oil was full before we went out, I know that for a fact, but I cant figure out what happened. It had 115,000 miles on it. Earlier that day I noticed some oil on the valve cover and around the oil cap, so I went to napa and got a new cover. Some people are telling me that the cap was the wrong one and really tight so I was holding to much pressure (dont really know about that, but is it possible...?) and someone else is saying that because I did this:
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/show...hreadid=113109 with my air filter I was sucking to much air and in some way that made it happen, (which I am 99.9% sure that it has nothing to do with what happened but maybe I am wrong?..), So my question is does anyone know why this could have happened?

bro something like that happened to my friend but what happened was one of his hoses blew and every type of fluid in the car hit the hood but(he had a 1986 dodge omni and the odometer had rolled over already)so it might be a ruptured hose

WTF...isn't that "lid" solid? How are you getting air to the engine with an upside down lid with a filter in it??????

Re: Sounded like someone put a bomb in my engine

did you see the pic on the link, you take the part that the filter sits in, which is the part that bolts to the maf, and turn it over and bolt it back to the maf.

By the author's description, I was under the impression that the lid was retro-fitted to the MAF, not removed and the bottom flipped.

What were you boosting at when this happened? EGTs?

What the hell??? Either he is explaining his 'mod' wrong, or it's the dumbest thing i've ever heard. Maybe I just don't get it. It sounds like he is removing the filter from the airbox then laying it on top for some dumb reason?

Re: Sounded like someone put a bomb in my engine

When the motor blew up, I was probably at about 8 psi. I crawled under the car today and there is a huge crack on the block . oh and no your not just laying it on top, I dont exactly know how to explain it. It is pretty much just taking the cover off the air box and securing the filter in it, but the filter doesnt sit in the bottom of the box it sits into the top so you have to take the top and put it where the bottom peice is and secure the filter in there, it is really stupid and doesnt cost anything, but it does work and makes the turbo sound hella loud. But back to the huge crack in my block, how could of this happened??

Re: Sounded like someone put a bomb in my engine

That could have happend from being driven WAY to hard by you or another owner. Something may have found its way into the air box, such as a stone, and traveled down into one of your cylinderns and got caught in the squish area and the BAM.
There is a good reason why ther is a top to the factory airbox. Large foren objects can not enter it.
How long before did you do this mod till the time that you cracked your block?

Is the crack in the cylinder walls or crankcase? You can easily find out what affects the wall near where it breaks. I highly doubt a foreign object in the intake cracking the block... it would have a hard enough time getting past the valve seat.

Re: Sounded like someone put a bomb in my engine

If he was pulling a load of air that the MAF didn't see...could have gone REAL lean REAL quickly.

There was 1 day or now that I think about it probably 2 between the time I did the airfilter mod. I doubt anything could have gotten in there, and I may be wrong but if the extra air going through the maf then wouldnt it compensate for it? The crack is in the crankcase, I havent pulled the engine apart to see waht is going on inside yet, the crack is visible from the outside, it is huge!

Re: Sounded like someone put a bomb in my engine

I am starting to think that there was something going wrong from the time that I got the car and now it finally gave out, but I need to figure out what could have caused it.

No.

It would be even worse if it went AROUND the MAF.
