87 XJ Manual Transmission Problem
Hello to all. Just had a few questions about my 87 XJ transmission. Here just recently I have been having a problem with my 5 speed. After about an hour and a half of driving I am starting to notice some kind of loud chattering/wining noise when I go to shift. It only starts to make this noise after the transmission has warmed up, and I'm moving. If I'm sitting still it won't do this, only when I'm in motion. I have already checked the fluid level in the transmission and it is completely full. Does anyone have any suggestions??
I'm starting to think that maybe the fluid needs changed or something, but any opinions would really help. By the way my XJ is a 4x4, 4.0L.

Hmm.. '87 model year, one of the two model years cursed by the bad Peugeot BA10/5 transmission. If you have this transmission, you'll have to drop the tranny to get to the clutch & components, as there is no bellhousing access cover.
I've been very fourtionate that mine is still around after 400,xxx miles, but have heard bad things about the syncros breaking. Good Luck -Nick |
