Multiple Starters for '88 S-10 Blazer

Hey folks, how is everybody? I'm having a problem that seems to be common on this site, the grinding noise when starting that goes away once you're started and sometimes goes away for months at a time. I've narrowed it down to either my flex plate or my throwout bearing so tomorrow I'm swapping the starter. Now, my problem: There are multiple starters for this year S-10. I don't have access to another vehicle or the money to buy one of each so my only option is to go buy the starter, swap it out, then take the core back. Anyone know how to tell which one I have without taking it out? Or, even better, how to fix this problem without buying new parts? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I know I'm a newbie but before posting this I searched the forum to see if this had been answered yet & offered advice to other members. Thanks again and take it easy.

Call your local parts place and ask them what info they need for this. I'm sure it can be figured out by engine size, trans type, etc. Be sure to read info with replacement starter on shimming to get correct clearance in gears, not hard, but important.
