WIP: 1/20 Tamiya Ferrari F189

So...

It is so good to be back amongst old friends, it feels like putting on a really old but comfortable pair of slippers, big mug of tea on the desk, opening up the kit box, finding detail sets inside and starting to plan a big full detail build. Ah yes, I remember...

So having brushed the dust from the box this is gonna be my return to modeling for over 3 years. I'm gonna build the Mansell car (obviously!!!) and will make this as detailed as I can (along the lines of my other full detail builds). I have picked up the Studio 27 and Acu-stion etch sets and also some Tabu tobacco decals. The only things I need to order are some new decals (kit ones are looking a bit yellow) and the paint (Zero Paints Rosso Red from Hiroboy).

Really looking forward to working with plastic again after another resin episode with the Renault R202.

So for the pics...

what's in the box...

first up, I noticed that there are two vanes missing from the underside at the rear so scratched up a pair from thin plasticard...

sanded off the moulded exhaust heat protection plates and will replace with etched versions...

the kit seat has the usual moulded belts which will obviously have to go, once done I'll cover with Hiro's beige material...

all done...

off and running and it feels good to be back

Good to see you building again Sean. Welcome back! Who knows, you might inspire me to blow the dust off of my kit.

Hey Sean, great to see you back. It's funny I've finished the 917 to wich I've got motivated to build after seeing your excellent build of the 917. Good luck with this one. I will follow this one even if I'm not a Ferrari fan.

Re: WIP: 1/20 Tamiya Ferrari F189

thanks for all the greets guys, a little more progress...

the new floor fins are in place as are the heat protection etched pieces, will add some weathering to this...

the original kit rear lift bracket is to be replaced with photoetch...

I also added a tube section to join both end pieces...

added the rear axles...

for the top of the transmission I'm gonna replace the rivets with etch and aftermarket ones...

which looks like this, a whole lot better than moulded versions...

had a real struggle to find some good pics of the weave pattern on the wings, from what I can make out the end plates are a different composite to the mid sections although I'm not 100% on that so might end up using the same decal.

I used this for the cross sections of the front and rear wings...

The monocoque is definately different though and has a more gold finish to the carbon so Im gonna order some more for that.

So far the wings look like this, I could resist adding the decals once the fibre decals had set...

that's it for now, thanks for following!

Re: WIP: 1/20 Tamiya Ferrari F189

Hi SeanyG!

It's good to see another WIP thread from you. I recently got back into modeling and discovered your previous Lotus 99T thread. It has been a great inspiration for me as I am building the same model. I do have a little question though, I was wondering how you fasten your cables to the car. In one of your posts you said you used fasteners, but I couldn't really find out how this works.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, I am new to detailing models this much, so there is stil alot to learn for me!

Anyway, good luck with this Ferrari! It is looking very good so far.

Hi there and welcome to the Forum!!!

Thanks for your kind comments and glad you liked the Lotus. For the fasteners you can do it two ways,

1: use some very fine wire (the metal wire inside plastic food bag twist ties is good) wrap around the wires to be secured, then drill a small hole where the fastener is going to sit and push the loose ends into the hole (hope that makes sense).
2: if you can't get access to the under side of the panel you want to attach the wires to, then you can just use a very thin strip of electricians tape, or for a chrome fastener some chrome decal, wrap it around the wires so the ends are hidden underneath and glue it to the surface.

I use both methods depending on where I want the cables to be fastened down. Hope that helps and thanks for following, I will have a little more progress this afternoon.

Re: WIP: 1/20 Tamiya Ferrari F189

The guys over at F1M have pointed out a major flaw in this kit in that the engine is actually too small and out of scale, having compared it to another couple of my kits and builds they are 100% right!

Anyway, I've been working on the 'ickle' engine still...

most of the details are scratch made, with the exception of the etched engine brackets that are from the S27 sheet. I added plug leads from some thin wire, also added hose ends to the coolant pipe that sits over engine block, the silver hoses are from Modelers and these tucked underneath the trumpets which are from the Acu-stion set. I drilled out the plastic versions, covered the base in cf decal and then added the new ones, I thought at the time the trumpets were too big and put it down to Acu-stion's usual poor quality etched pieces but I guess it's the small engine layout thats done it.

I also aded plumbing to the small radiator that sits in front of the rear wing support. All hose ends are from Sakatsu. I scratch built the suspension units in the usual way and also added plumbing into the small cylinders as per my reference pics. The round oil tank needed further hoses attached, an overflow which simply has that long tube attached which you see on the top of the transmission, the other is a small hose that sits the otherside which connects to the engine block, again Sakatsu ends were used here.

Finally a dry fit onto the base, looking at it now I definately agree the engine is too small, what a cock up Mr Tamiya!

Zero paint (Rosso Red) and some carbon decals should come today from Hiroboy. It's gonna be so nice not to have to do any masking with a paint job for once!

Thanks for following!

Re: WIP: 1/20 Tamiya Ferrari F189

Looking great so far Sean..!! I particularly like the seat 'cloth' that you used from MFH. The engine does look a bit small, but it doesn't detract from the overall look of the model. Just goes to show that sometimes even Tamiya can get it wrong...

Re: WIP: 1/20 Tamiya Ferrari F189

The engine looks pretty awesome Sean! Gotta admit that it does look a little small in comparison to the undertray and the monocoque. When you're finished with the exhaust and the plumbing etc., I don't think it will show that much though.

Looking forward to the next update

Re: WIP: 1/20 Tamiya Ferrari F189

next update,

got all the body panels primed in Halfords White Plastic Primer and the paint arrived from Hiroboy...

... and paint on with 2 part clear just waiting to be polished, love the fact that I've got no masking to do ...

as the reference picture (from F1 Modeling) shows, there are ridges around the holes in the monocoque, on the kit these are just flat, so with a little help from some thin black vinyl I added the raised areas...

the floor was given just a coat of flat aluminium around the engine bay, I have some panels from the etch sets to add to this and will also add some discolouring to the exhaust ports...

and for the exhausts, plain flat white spray with some grey wash... not very often you get such a simple colour scheme for these...

the rear wing is finished and clear coated, no dramas here but a little fiddly...

got the whole monocopque c/f'd which took a good while, I wasnt 100% sure on this decal as some pics show the weave to be more golden, but I think its the nearest I can get. For the rear of the monocoque I added the etched piece for the back and then added some Hiro heat shied foil to the edges as per my reference pics...

more to come shortly and thanks again for following
