91 ciera does at stops...

im having trouble figuring out what's wrong with my dads car...its a 91 cutlass ciera 3.3L...im not should what the problem could be...the check service engine soon light doesnt come on and i've jumped the connector that the scan tool goes to and i get a 12 with no other codes...

it wasnt starting at all before and got it running after changing the timing chain and gears and i've also changed the sparkplugs and wires and i've also checked the fuel pressure and my gauge read about 35...

it starts up fine no rough idle or anything and it drives fine...its just at stops that it dies and my dad says that when it dies it starts up right away...

im not sure if the crank sensor would have anything to do with it? i've changed it like a year or 2 ago...i think the module is good it was changed a while back and i remember when it was bad the car would shake alot and idel rough...someone told me it might be the fuel pressure regulator im not sure though...well thanks for any help i get

Re: 91 ciera does at stops...

LOL i just went through the same exact thing with an 89 ciera.I had 2 bad injectors. Every one with a no start cutlass problem check for spark and fuel pressure and if you have those go to fuel injectors. One bad one will shut you down because of the current drag on the rest of them and when it goes completely you won't start at all. I would do that before going after the crank shaft sensor which is a b#@!ch to get out.If you get into a no start condition rent a noid light from autozone.Usually u can get at one of the injector wire plugs at least.plug the noid light into the into the injector plug turn engine over it should blink if the circuit is pulsing. If its not you have a bad one.If you are mechanicaly inclined then u can to pull some parts off the top of engine to get at the rest. You then check with a meter on ohms.Resistance on these should read 12-13 ohms. less than 10 its bad.On my ciera which is an 89 the computer doesn't throw a code for this and it was quite frustrating. Especially when it was only stalling once in a while.Im glad mine went out all the way because it forced me to test and check everything.Hope this helps someone.

Re: 91 ciera does at stops...

ok so if it was the injectors it wouldnt start at all? well his car starts up fine and runs fine then dies when he stops at a stop sign or stop light...it doesnt seem to die on him anymore after changing the fuel pressure regulator...i took the cap off of the fuel rail to release the fuel pressure before removing the fuel pressure regulator...there was alot of pressure in the fuel rail i pressed the little needle in and the fuel shot up all the way to the hood...im not sure what caused the rail to have that much pressure? maybe a bad fuel pressure regulator? so now he says that when he first starts it in the morning that it idles a bit rough...i checked all the vacuum hoses and couldnt find any bad cracked vacuum hoses

Re: 91 ciera does at stops...

my dads car is still running bad and i still dont know what it is...check engine light still doesnt come on...he said in the mornings it starts fine and tries to die at stops but he has his foot on the brake and gas pedal so it wont die...

starts fine in the morning and if he drives to the store which is like 5 minutes away...he goes in and shops and says that the car takes a couple minutes to start...

he took his car to get smoged and it passed but the guy said it just barely passed and he took it to a mechanic and he put it on a scanner and he said he couldnt find the problem...i did find a couple wires that werent connected to anything and i couldnt find anywhere they plug into...i have a haynes manual but the wiring diagram doesnt show everything is there anywhere online that i can go to look at the service manual? i seen alot of them online but i have to buy them and i dont have any way of paying for it online...thanks for any help i get
