99 chevy k1500 z71 no fire
Ok here goes....I have a 99 chevy k1500 I just recently had the 305 lock up right after changing intake manifold gasket. I found a 95 with the 350 and swapped the blocks switching everything so the sensors would all hook right back up in the truck. Got it all changed over then started the truck and it ran fine. Drove it about a quarter mile and it died. Started back up and drove it halfway back and it died again. Then started it up and pulled it back to the house and now it will not start. Motor turns over fine. Not getting spark to plugs and the only code I am getting is a p0336 which is crankshaft position sensor. Tried swapping two from other running trucks and it is still not turning over have no idea what to do or who to turn to at this point. Just had a 99 jimmy pull the same thing a couple months before and just haven't swapped motors since it quit running.

Is the code a past or present or active code? Always clear code and see if code comes back. The code says crank sensor circuit performance problem. Also check for spark right out of coil and if dist shaft is turning. I would check all wiring and plug in on it first.

Re: 99 chevy k1500 z71 no fire
with how all this occured my guess is you damaged the wiring or connectors to the ckp/pcm....
also check the distributor cap for arcing . |

The code showed up and I cleared it and it comes back. I changed the crank sensor like I said but nothing. The dist shaft is turning and all the plug wires are new. How do I check for spark out of the coil? |

I don't really know how to check for a lot of these things with the distributor.

And where would I find the cranks sensor circuit? I know where the sensor is thats about it.

remove PCM connectors check for damage / corroded pins etc.. check harness for damage ...measure ohms for connection from the ckp to the pcm connector.. if you can only replace engines and you are not up to speed on this technical stuff best have a good repair shop with the proper tools and diagrams find the issue. remove a spark plug and with the plug grounded to the engine the electrode spark should be blue. weak or no spark it then also can be distributor components ..timing should be checked if you do have some spark.. |

Or as in when I was a kid they always told me to grab it while engine cranking/running and see if it would knock my socks off. But with that code present/coming back you need to check the crank sensor circuit.

The wiring circuit is from where the wire plugs on to where it goes to including the plugin.

Re: 99 chevy k1500 z71 no fire
Alot of time the crank sensor will get overtightened and the knurled bronze threaded insert the sensor bolt screws into is pulling out of the composite front cover. The airgap is then too wide and problems like you describe will happen. I have seen it more than once. Insert should be flush to just below front cover surface. Sometimes they can be tapped back into the cover, apply loctite to the bolt and snug it and see what happens.

I will check the crank sensor and double check the wiring to the vcm. I'm not getting any spark at all at the moment and the computer stuff is getting to be a headache.

Re: 99 chevy k1500 z71 no fire
Well come to find out procaddytech was right on the money. Dad tapped the cps in with a screwdriver and hammer and texted me at work today and told me it was alive. I came home tonight and the truck purrs like a kitten. So much for all those who told me the block swap from the 95 wouldn't work. I have never been happier with a vehicle. 4 months off and on work was worth it.
