Rowdy Burns' #51 Exxon Lumina
Anyone who's seen Days of Thunder will remember this car. I used the old AMT Lumina here. The decals are from Powerslide. I also replaced the red stripes with neon decal film to match the car from the film. The paint is Tamiya black polished out. There is no clear on this car.

Re: Rowdy Burns' #51 Exxon Lumina
Great job! And great movie too! Pics look like CGI (take it as a compliment :P)
If I haven't built 3 Nascar kits already I would love to get some DOT kits. Gloss looks like polished up to 6000 and stopped there like satin finish, but the texture looks like totally polished, or maybe it's just me. Would you explain that process or finish? |

Quote:
I scuffed the bare plastic with 800 grit sandpaper, followed by Mr. Surfacer 1200 for the base, and then Tamiya gloss black out of a heated rattle can. I set the body aside for 24 hours and then rubbed the finish with some 3M medium compound. That was followed up by Mequiar's Scratch X and then finally a polish and wax. The finish is quite smooth and there is a deep gloss. The photos give an illusion of a satin finish, but I assure you, it's shiny!! Thanks for the compliments guys.... I normally use 2 part automotive clear, but am trying some different techniques for different era race cars. I know the DoT movie cars were painted in the late 80's and that lacquer paint was the choice back then for stock cars. |

Re: Rowdy Burns' #51 Exxon Lumina
If I can get the decals to fit, I'd love to do Cole's pink #46 Superflo car.
Thanks everyone! |
