A Step Back In Time.

Well, now settled, at long last, I've unpacked all my boxes and have uncovered all things F1 I've accumulated in my 'journey' of devotion to the car lying dormant, but waiting, for many years.

Last night, I picked up Car's "Blast Off!" edition from June 1994. There was nothing particularly spectacular about the info on the F1 - well documented and photographed as it undoubtedly was at the time. It's a subject that has been exhaustively researched and documented time and again here. Maybe I've just grown accustomed to the greatness of the car. Blasé perhaps?

What did strike me whilst looking through the magazine was how truly advanced and otherworldly the car truly was. Ferrari's listed for sale at the time were the Mondial, 348, 512TR and the 456. From Porsche was the 968, 911 and the 928GTS. Lamborghini offered the Diablo and Maserati Fast Rusting Squarish Boxes. And further? Not too much more. How amazingly advanced the F1 really was. A fact I'd almost forgotten, to be honest.

Nowadays, of course, there are Zondas, Veyrons and Koenigseggs all competing in the carboned-out hypercar stakes, but in 1994 ... amidst the quaint, almost archaic adverts for chip tuning boxy Golfs and co. the F1 was certainly an almighty and impressive sight.

100% agree!

The F1 is always going to be the one and only real McLaren to me. It shares all the basics what real supercar means to me. Like an old Lamborghini's and Ferrari's, Maserati's and so on.
Miura, Countach, Diablo, older Ferrari's and specialty F40/F50. Pure drivers cars and nothing unnessary with them.
All these shares same concept; big V12, manual gearbox and nothing ABS, ESP or anything race, comfortable, sport buttons anywhere. Just driver and the car.

Also the looks; F1 is so elegant even today, looks bran new.
Lamborghini's, so different world but so fantastic. Countach and Diablo; truly supercars. First image for me of word "supercar" is an yellow 90' Diablo, with open hatch lamps and four cromed tailpipes up to the sky. And the Countach; lost of words.
And no need to say anything sound of these cars...........

Those fantastic days of the 90's, never going to be back. The time when we saw perhaps the most greatest and simpliest supercars ever.
Fortunately we have the history with us and possibility to see these legendady cars if lucky enough.

Re: A Step Back In Time.

Thanks for sharing this observation, Murray, nicely put. I think many of us will nodd our heads in realising it.

Good to hear you going through your 'archive'. Looking forward to hear (or see?) more about your collection
